Ubisoft has announced an official release date of June 6, 2024 for the launch of its music learning service Rocksmith+ on PlayStation and new PC storefronts. Rocksmith+ was originally released by Ubisoft in 2022.
Music games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band base their appeal on the simulation of playing in a band by combining classic rhythm gameplay with the iconic plastic guitar and instrument controllers. Rocksmith, on the other hand, has evolvedinto something of a next-level product. Whereas the original 2011 and 2014 releases on PC and consoles were rhythm games that allowed players to use real guitars instead of plastic controllers, Rocksmith+ succeeded them by pivoting into a service oriented around musical education, gamifying guitar and piano lessons for players who want to learn to play the instruments in the real world.
According to an announcement from Ubisoft, players on PlayStation platforms and those who prefer to get their PC games through Steam will get their chance to enjoy Rocksmith+ for themselves on June 6, 2024. Previously, the game was exclusive to iOS, Android, and PC via the Ubisoft Connect (formerly UPlay) platform. When the service launches on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, though, Rocksmith will have seen its first console edition since Ubisoft released Rocksmith 2014 on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, and macOS.
As a music learning tool, Rocksmith+ is designed more for helping players acquire real guitar and piano skills than for entertaining party gameplay. It uses original recordings from a large licensed library that gets new songs on a monthly basis. Recent additions include titles from The Smashing Pumpkins, Sharon Van Etten, and versions of iconic songs like «La Bamba.»
Unlike rhythm games like Guitar Hero or the musical Fortnite Festival mode, Rocksmith+ doesn't require a separate controller or any bespoke hardware to use. Instead, players can download the Rocksmith Tuner app to use in conjunction with the Rocksmith+ software. Rocksmith Tuner uses the the player's smart device as a mic to listen to their guitar- or piano-playing, using the sound to trigger gameplay interactions. Guitar and bass learners that prefer a wired connection can acquire a Rocksmith Real Tone Cable and plug it into an electric guitar or bass, then into their PC or console via USB. Those learning piano can use a wired MIDI interface to hook up their piano, keyboard, or MIDI controller.
Rocksmith+ comes with a free edition that allows access to a limited set of songs, lessons, and features available. Full access to the song and lesson library, including all future updates, is unlocked by purchasing a subscription plan. Players who purchase a 12-month subscription plan also get a 7-day free
