New users can access a limited number of songs and lessons for free when they sign up for a one-week trial. The app also uses a single subscription so that users can access it on any platform at any time.
Ubisoft describes Rocksmith as a gamified learning tool rather than a music game like Guitar Hero. Instead of a specialized controller, the 2014 version allowed users to connect any electric or bass guitar to their PC or console using an adapter. However, Rocksmith+ also works with acoustic guitars, using the player’s smartphone as a microphone. A post-launch update added songs and lessons for pianos, electronic keyboards, and MDI controllers.
Primarily developed by Ubisoft San Francisco, the publisher announced the subscription service at Ubisoft Forward in 2021. Rocksmith+ was initially supposed to launch on PC and consoles first, with Android and iOS versions coming later. However, the PC release came first in 2022, with the Android and iOS apps launching in 2023. With the PS4 and PS5 ports coming in June, that only leaves the Xbox One and Series X/S versions unaccounted for.
