Report: Nintendo Switch 2 launch pushed back to early 2025

After spending a couple of years in early access, Darkest Dungeon 2 launched in full for PC last May, and though it’s certainly a very different experience from its predecessor in several key ways, it’s also one that’s gained its fair share of devoted fans. Of course, thus far, the brutal RPG has been available only on PC, though that might be about to change soon.

If you’ve read the last 10 issues of my Forgotten Gems column, you’ve probably noticed a pattern. I pick a game that may either spark some recognition and you’ll go “oh, yeah – what happened to it?” – or you’ve never heard of the game I’m profiling and you google what year I was born so that you can rest easy that it’s not you, it’s me. Inevitably, the column turns gloomy. An awesome-sounding sequel was planned, but never made. Or, somehow, an entire series of games is no longer accessible to play.

A well-known Sega leaker has corroborated a recent report claiming the Switch 2 is targeting a March 2025 release. They also offered some additional insights into how Nintendo handled the widely reported internal delay of the Switch successor.

Nintendo's next console, tentatively called the Switch 2, may be released as early as March 2025. That's according to a newly emerged report that also revealed some other alleged details about Nintendo's plans for the upcoming system.

The gaming world is eager to get their hands on Nintendo’s next hardware, but it seems plans regarding the Switch 2 have been shifting behind the scenes. We recently heard rumors from numerous reliable sources that while the Switch 2 was originally slated for a late-2024 release, it has now slipped to Q1 2025, and it seems that may have a knock-on effect on how and when Nintendo reveals the hardware.

Nintendo is planning to reveal the Switch 2 in June, a reliable industry insider has said. The same source also chimed in on the speculation about the timing of the next Nintendo Direct focused on first-party games.

Recent reports have claimed that Nintendo has delayed the launch of its next-gen console out of 2024 and into Q1 of 2025, which, if true, would also likely mean that plans for when to announce the console have changed as well.

Nintendo has confirmed that its next Nintendo Direct will take place this week.

Nintendo‘s shares have dropped in Japan following reports that the successor to the Switch will likely be released in the first quarter of 2025.
