A new report has claimed that the next entry into the Battlefield franchise will launch alongside a free-to-play Battle Royale mode. Battlefield already has its own Battle Royale in the form of Firestorm, but that required players to own the base game, limiting the potential player base in an already crowded market.
It's been a rough few years for the Battlefield franchise. The launch of Battlefield 2042 in late 2021 did not go as expected for DICE, with the studio facing plenty of backlash for what many felt was one of the worst entries into the series in a long time. To the developer's credit, DICE has continued to update Battlefield 2042with new content and fixes, rather than leaving it to die and moving on to the next project. Nowadays, the game is in a much better state, and hopefully, the next attempt will be better out of the gates after this experience.
In a report from Insider Gaming, Tom Henderson writes that the next Battlefield title will come bundled with a free-to-play Battle Royale mode, with a setting «somewhere around 2025-2030.» According to Henderson, the mode is being handled by Ripple Effect (formerly known as DICE LA), and will not require purchasing the base game to play. This should ensure the game has a fighting chance to find an audience in the Battle Royale market. Henderson's report also gives insight into the potential release date of the next title, with the game having a target release date of October. However, this could still slip into next year, with some believing that Battlefield should skip a 2024 release.
There's no doubt that on the surface, Battlefield and the Battle Royale genre seem like a perfect pairing. Large-scale action, vehicular combat, and plenty of players — it should be a good match. But with the likes of Apex Legends releasing in 2019, and the first version of Call of Duty: Warzone coming out back in 2020, it'll be interesting to see if Battlefield has missed the boat on this one. Of the best Battle Royale games, most players already have their favorite, and it would likely take something spectacular to bring them on board for the long haul. While Firestorm exists for Battlefield 5, that required ownership of the game, so a new Battlefield battle royale being free-to-play could prove to be a difference-maker.
It's been a busy couple of days for the future direction of the Battlefield franchise. A few days back, one of the studios involved in the series going forward, Ridgeline Games, lost its studio co-founder for future Battlefield games. With Ridgeline Games being focused on single-player Battlefield experiences, it's unlikely to affect the Battle Royale news, but it may cause some brief internal chaos. If a free-to-play Battlefield Battle Royale is

It’s been a turbulent few years for the Battlefield franchise, and recent developments haven’t made things any smoother. Last month, it was announced that Marcus Lehto – general manager of Ridgeline Games, a studio formed to develop narrative-driven Battlefield campaigns – had left EA, and shortly afterward, it emerged that amidst EA’s mass layoffs, Ridgeline Games had been shuttered entirely.
A Red Dead Redemption 2 player has shared a disturbing revelation of what happens when you shoot the leader of the Chelonian cult in the game. It’s an easily missed detail of Red Dead Redemption 2, given the infrequency that players actually encounter the Chelonians.
Ex-Battlefield director Marcus Lehto doesn't «have anything positive to say about EA» after the publisher shut down his Ridgeline Games studio shortly after his resignation. The Ridgeline founder and Halo co-creator was previously working on Battlefield's next singleplayer project.
Confession time: I already have a copy of Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for the PS5 even though I still don't have a PlayStation 5 console. I never get consoles the moment they come out and usually wait a few years for their next version. In the PlayStation 5's case, I thought it was going to be the PS5 Slim, but it looks like I could have another option by the end of the year: The PlayStation 5 Pro. Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming says the PS5 Pro details leaked by the Moore’s Law is Dead YouTube channel came from documentation Sony itself recently sent to third-party developers.
Marcus Lehto – co-creator of the Halo universe and former lead of the recently shuttered Ridgeline Games – says he doesn't have «anything positive to say about EA».
Battlefield 2042 has revealed Season 7, which starts on March 19. It's been a long journey for Battlefield 2042 since its bumpy launch, which made it one of the most frustrating games of 2021. Entering its fourth year, DICE continues to support Battlefield 2042 through updates with new content, modes, and improvements.
Ghost Recon Breakpoint was a bit of a dumpster fire, and Ghost Recon Frontline got cancelled in response to widespread backlash against its core premise, so the last few years have definitely been rough for the Ghost Recon franchise. Even so, though a new game hasn’t yet been officially announced, it seems safe to assume, given the magnitude of the franchise, that Ubisoft does have plans for a new game in the series. Now, a report published by Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson has shed light on alleged details about that next instalment.
Look for Apex Legends to begin to expand past just the traditional battle royale format in the coming year as part of an overall plan to grow the community and evolve the IP.
EA's closure of Ridgeline Games last night was a «gut punch», the company's former boss Marcus Lehto has now said.
From Battlefield studio Ridgeline Games being shut down to Respawn Entertainment’s single player Star Wars FPS being cancelled, a number of EA studios have been affected by the company’s recently-announced mass layoffs. It seems, however, that the two major projects that BioWare has in production haven’t been affected.
Electronic Arts (EA) has shared that Ridgeline Games, one of its Battlefield-focused studios, will be closing. The announcement accompanied the news of mass layoffs hitting EA, with 670 employees to be laid off. Ridgeline Games was responsible for the development of the single-player Battlefield project, which will be handed off to another studio.
