Throughout the game, Arthur's TB progresses in a way that starts to have a significant narrative impact. However, the mission where Arthur contracts the deadly disease has a very specific trigger, meaning that avoiding it can open up other avenues. While this would effectively stop the story and lock out a large portion of the game, it is a viable option for those wishing for Arthur Morgan to live on without succumbing to his seemingly inevitable fate.

As Arthur's fateful incident occurs at Horseshoe Overlook, it doesn't take very long for this crucial juncture to arise. isn't a completely linear experience, meaning the situation is a little more complicated than it appears. The story is focused and propulsive, but the exploration of the game's world isn't entirely locked into the way that the narrative moves things along. From side missions to simply riding a horse out into the wilderness, the breadth of the game accessible at this point still has plenty to offer.

Arthur contracts TB scuffling with Thomas Downes as a part of the early story mission "" in Chapter 2. Ignoring the mission will lock the Van der Linde gang in Horseshoe Overlook and stall story progression, preventing the completion of any further story missions and locking out the entire region of New Austin in addition to any side missions that rely on story progression. However, there is still a great deal that can be accomplished in the game. Everything North and East of Blackwater is still open for exploration, including Lemoyne and Ambarino. Additionally, many side missions can still be started and finished.

For those who love the hunting and fishing mechanics of, avoiding the mission where Arthur contracts TB doesn't lock off much of what the game has to offer. Hunting and fishing are unlocked early on, making both viable options for a TB-free Arthur to enjoy. Most animals can be hunted in the regions Arthur can access, including most legendary targets. The Trapper is available at all times, so furs collected from hunts can be traded in for nifty (if garish) outfits. Additionally, Pearson is available for satchel upgrades early on, making it possible to craft storage upgrades using pelts.
