Super Mario RPG's recently released Switch remake is a lovely thing, freshening up a much-loved classic for a new generation, while ensuring its core remains faithful enough that it can deliver a wonderful blast of nostalgia for long-time fans. And it turns out that faithfulness runs deep, with players having discovered it restores a fun little easter egg that was cut from the original version during the localisation process for release outside of Japan.

With the remake of Mario’s debut RPG just a little over a week away fans are getting ever more excited with every passing ounce of information Nintendo is willing to share. This time the news doesn’t come in just a short teaser trailer, but we’ve finally gotten a great look at the official overview trailer in English to tide us over while we wait. We get a great taste at things we’ve seen before such as the playable cast of characters all the way from Mallow to Peach and a great look at more of the available skills at their disposal as well. The trailer also specifies how the new style of timed hits work as there are two key styles to knock it out of the park. The first is a timed hit that does additional damage to an enemy, while a perfectly timed hit will manage to do splash damage to every enemy in battle. This is a great incentive to get players trying to master their skills at timing attacks and blocks for both avoiding and dishing out damage best they can! The trailer also highlights the new Breezy mode which makes fights and leveling up easier in addition to a brand new monster list that will detail all their strengths and weaknesses for maximum planning skills for Mario and friends!
One major interesting inclusion in this trailer is a potentially new item called the Extra-Shiny Stone. It’s hard to tell as of right now, but the original game had a simply shiny stone that could unlock a bonus boss but this inclusion of an Extra-Shiny Stone lines up with the Japanese website saying that there was an even harder boss to find via another stone Mario and friends could get their hands on. This could be wildly off the mark, but it’s interesting enough to see an item that wasn’t originally there unless for some reason they opted to change the name. The trailer is also sure to spotlight the variety of mini-games seen in SMRPG including a noticeable difference to the Yoshi races seen in the original. This is a particularly good change as the rhythm-based race often threw players off as the rhythm never felt quite right, but now it seems there are clear button prompts as to when to hit the button to help people better succeed in the race against Boshi and the many other Yoshi living on the island!
