The Pokémon Company has confirmed that it is looking into the recently-launched Palworld.
In a statement, the Japanese firm said that it was 'investigating' apparent similarities between its smash hit and another title launched in 2024. While Palworld isn't named, it is definitely Palworld that is being referenced.
“We have received many inquiries regarding another company’s game released in January 2024,” the company wrote.
“We have not granted any permission for the use of Pokémon intellectual property or assets in that game. We intend to investigate and take appropriate measures to address any acts that infringe on intellectual property rights related to the Pokémon.
“We will continue to cherish and nurture each and every Pokémon and its world, and work to bring the world together through Pokémon in the future.”
Palworld launched on January 19th and shifted over eight million copies in its first six days on sale. The title has drawn comparisons with Pokémon, largely due to some of its monster designs.
The game's director – and CEO of developer Pocket Pair - Takuro Mizobe has responded to allegations of plagiarism, saying that he'd "appreciate it" if people would stop saying that the studio has copied work.
“While we have received various opinions about Palworld, it is important to note that the supervision of all materials related to Palworld is conducted by a team, including myself," they wrote.
"I bear the responsibility for the produced materials. I would appreciate it if these comments towards artists involved in Palworld would cease.”

As we noted yesterday, Pokemon Day is drawing ever closer. Right now, it’s two weeks away, and fans are curious about what might be done during the traditional fan-made holiday that The Pokemon Company later turned into an annual event. We say “annual event” because the company also seems to do something on the day to honor the brand and give fans something in return for their loyalty to it. Many are wondering whether a Pokemon Presents will happen, potentially showing off the new games they’re making or getting hints at what may be in the pipeline.
The exclusive promo card for Pokémon Day 2024 has been revealed, prompting collectors and players to get ready to claim it. Every year, Nintendo celebrates the anniversary of its classic monster-catching franchise in February, which lines up with the release of the first titles in Japan. The company does so by hosting a special broadcast in which it announces the upcoming releases for the following months and years. This includes new sets, video games, animation series, movies, and much more – game announcements on Pokémon Day tend to be the most common, however.
Helping to keep the game fresh and ever-evolving, the is frequently adding new game mechanics to the rules for players to equip in their decks. The upcoming expansion is set to bring back one of these mechanics that has not received new cards for over a decade. Trainer and Item cards classified as ACE SPEC are so powerful that there is a restriction on Trainers to only have one of these bright magenta cards in their deck, regardless of what type of ACE SPEC is held.
The success of Palworld has naturally led to comparisons between the game and Pokémon, with the internet now debating whether any legal ramifications could happen due to their similarities.
The Pokemon Company warned on Thursday it plans to investigate reports that the new hit video game "Palworld" violates the intellectual copyright of its iconic franchise. Widely described as "Pokemon with Guns" when it was released last week, the makers of "Palworld" said it sold more than eight million copies in less than six days.

The dream continues for independent Japanese developer Pocketpair as Palworld has now sold over seven million units in just five days since its early access launch. The open world survival crafting game with monster collection mechanics had sold one million in eight hours, two in twenty-four, three in forty, five million in three days, and six in four days. What's even more impressive is that, according to Geoff Keighley, these sales are for the Steam version alone. They do not account for sales on the Microsoft Store via PC/Xbox, nor do they account for Game Pass player numbers.
