The all-but-official PS5 Pro has been a prominent talking point over the last couple of weeks, especially with leaked specifications and the like only adding fuel to the fire. But from our perspective, it's starting to seem like Sony has a fairly hard sell on its hands — even if the mid-gen upgrade ends up being aimed squarely at hardcore PlayStation fans.
Indeed, we recently discussed the PS5 Pro in a dedicated feature, simply titled Talking Point: How Do You Feel About the PS5 Pro? We gathered opinions from our editorial team, but we also asked for readers to share their own thoughts, via a poll at the bottom of the article, and the comments section.
Pro strats
The results of said poll paint a somewhat divided picture. Based on 2,200 votes, just 23% of Push Square users said they'd buy a PS5 Pro on release, although a further 11% said they were «interested». 16% said they simply need to know more about the console.
And then things get a bit more negative. 17% said they don't think the upgraded console is necessary — a common perspective in the comments section as well — while 23% said they're fine with their current PS5. And lastly, 11% said they hate the idea of there being a PS5 Pro.
So, we're basically looking at a 50-50 split between enthusiasm and cynicism here.
Do you find these poll results at all surprising? Where do you stand on the PS5 Pro right now? Take a step back and observe the community in the comments section below.
Robert (or Rob if you're lazy) has been a fan of PlayStation since the 90s, when Tekken 2 introduced him to the incredible world of video games. He still takes his fighting games seriously, but RPGs are his true passion. The Witcher, Dragon Quest, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, he's played 'em all — a little too much, some might say.
The price is gonna be a big factor
@Ultrasmiles I've got a strong feeling it ain't gonna be cheap. In fact, I can see it being even more expensive than people expect. Sony's in love with high-price (optional) products this gen.
These polls seem to have no real weight as I think the portal one was negative and the same people who bought that will be playing their PS5 Pro on it.
I don't think it will be as successful as PS4 Pro (inflation, potentially higher price etc), but if that poll did turn out to be a reflection of overall sales, 23% of 55,000,000 is 12,650,000 (or so Google tells me). PS4 Pro did around 14,000,000 by Jan 2020.
I doubt PS5 Pro will sell that many units. In fact I'd say that's beyond Sony's wildest dreams.
A healthy niche is what they will be hoping for here. Enough to spread the word about PSSR. The market will be somewhere between the folks who bought the base PS5 and the folks who bought the InZone PC gear.
