PlayStation Fans Torn on Prospect of PS5 Pro | Push Square

If the new Alone in the Dark PS5 reboot has given you a classic survival horror itch, then Sony's subscription service PS Plus Premium is looking to scratch it. Available from Tuesday, 16th April 2024, the old PS1 terror Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare will be available to members on the top tier, complete with all the bells and whistles that come with the re-releases Sony accepts on the service. It's joined by MediEvil and Star Wars: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire on the same day.

Despite the lack of an official reveal, more information has emerged about the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro model, and just how much value it's going to bring to the table is becoming increasingly clear. The idea of a mid-generation Pro upgrade was set into place during the last console generation, with the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X offering significant boosts to consoles that were struggling to meet high resolution and performance targets on some games. It's not surprising that both Sony and Microsoft appear ready to continue the tradition, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's worthwhile.

Sony likes to put on major State of Play livestreams and host its PlayStation Showcase during the month of May, and it appears the company is gearing up to do so once again in 2024. Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb reports he's heard «a bunch of times» from sources that Sony is planning an event for May, and it sounds more like another big PlayStation Showcase rather than a more subdued State of Play.

Dave the Diver team Mintrocket has today announced the PS5 and PS4 versions of its 2023 indie hit will release on 16th April 2024, and they'll be available straight away via PS Plus Extra also. Current members of Sony's subscription service will be able to download and play the game without charge, granting them access to the original experience and a bit of Godzilla-themed DLC in May.

Today marks the end of Jim Ryan's 30-year tenure at Sony Interactive Entertainment. Having climbed the ladder of the company all the way to the top, his five-year stint as CEO has now drawn to a close, with Hiroki Totoki temporarily taking over until a permanent replacement is found. Speaking on the latest Official PlayStation Podcast, Ryan has one last interview, in which he comments on the platform's evolution, his career, and his thoughts on the PS3 boomerang controller. It's worth a listen.

Although it's yet to be officially announced, we all know that the PS5 Pro is real, and it's likely dropping later this year. A mid-gen upgrade on the PS5, Sony will probably position the refreshed console as another premium product — something that it's been doing throughout the generation so far, with stuff like PS Portal and the DualSense Edge.

Rise of the Ronin, the latest tentpole PS5 console exclusive from legendary Japanese developer Team Ninja, has been subject to a colossal marketing push in Asia, where posters and billboards have been spotted around cities such as Taipei for several weeks now. That’s all culminated in an Edo period art exhibition in Huashan 1914 Creative Park – coincidentally, the former home of a Japanese sake manufacturer– where Sony has installed several 19th-century props inspired by the game.

There is mounting evidence that Sony is preparing to release a more powerful PlayStation 5 model, and sooner than you might think. Analysts have confidently predicted the new machine will launch at the end of 2024, while a series of leaks detailing its specs — sourced from official Sony documentation distributed to developers — gives us an idea of how big an upgrade it will be. The strategy seems very similar to that followed by both Sony and Microsoft one console generation ago with the release of PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X: deluxe versions of their console platforms with upgraded specs, released in the middle of the console generation.

The days of developers pushing for native resolutions feel like they’re coming to an end. The reality is that it’s a waste of resources, especially as upscalers like DLSS (or Deep Learning Super Sampling, to give it its full name) get better and better. It’s no surprise Sony is exploring similar technology with PS5 Pro, and it looks like this is all part of a long-term plan which will eventually expand to PS6 as well.

Sony's own upscaling tech for the rumored PlayStation 5 Pro - PS5 Pro PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) - is said to offer vastly improved image quality for current PS5 titles.

Sony is reportedly undertaking an internal investigation to determine how exactly the specs for Trinity, the codename by which the colloquially-named PS5 Pro is internally known, leaked so entirely over the weekend. The incident occurred during a third-party developer rollout, and while we may never learn the culprit's identity, there will undoubtedly be additional security ramifications for other third-party devs moving forward.

A glut of additional PS5 and PS4 games are coming to PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium this week, and as is usually the case, there's a lot of variety on show. March's update, which consists of 13 titles across the two tiers, has everything from sports sim NBA 2K24 to ultra-niche Super Neptunia RPG.
