PlayStation Buying Helldivers 2 Studio Arrowhead Game Studios Debunked by CEO

It’s been a rather interesting Game Developers Conference for Larian Studios, with the developer confirming that Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t receive DLC, expansions or a sequel. Instead, it has two new games in mind, including a “very big RPG” that will dwarf its 2023 magnum opus. Since it doesn’t have the tech yet, this won’t be the studio’s next game.

Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami has had a long and winding road through the industry, starting at Capcom, before jumping to short-lived offshoot Clover Games, then PlatinumGames, and then his own Bethesda-backed studio Tango Gameworks. Mikami stepped away from Tango in the past year, leaving it in the capable hands of protégé John Johanas, and it was unclear what his next step would be.

Arrowhead Game Studios is currently investigating an issue with Helldivers 2 crashes that many players have been reporting in late March. The studio suspects the problem to be related to the latest Helldivers 2 patch, as well as select weapons.

Nightdive Studios' remake is coming to consoles. After a successful 2016 Kickstarter that raised over $1.3 million, the title was released on PC in March last year. Despite having a long and troubled development cycle and being delayed several times, the remake was extremely well-received by fans and critics alike, with most praising it for staying true to the beloved 1994 game while bringing it up to modern standards.

Saber Interactive is officially splitting from Embracer Group, bringing a few more studios formerly owned by the Swedish company with it as well.

emptyvessel, a new independent AAA games studio formed of veteran developers based in Austin, Texas, has announced its establishment. The studio’s founding staff has worked on iconic franchises such as DOOM, Quake, Call of Duty, The Last of Us, Borderlands, Tomb Raider, The Callisto Protocol, and more. Its first title is an Unreal Engine-5 powered title that will leverage its experience in the “immersive shooter” space.

You know that it’s a busy year for gaming when a project by an industry legend launches with hardly any fanfare. That’s exactly what happened in February 2023 with Akka Arrh. Created by Jeff Minter and his eccentric studio Llamasoft, the neon-tinted shooter is a remake of a 1982 Atari game that never saw the light of day after being deemed too difficult. Minter got the greenlight to revive the project, bringing it to life as a retro arcade shooter built in his unmistakable style.

Earlier today, rumours started swirling that PlayStation was moments away from announcing its acquisition of Arrowhead Game Studios, the Swedish team behind the wildly successful Helldivers 2. While the two parties already have a strong relationship – Sony has published both of the Helldivers titles – founder Johan Pilestedt was quick to pour cold water on the reports.

PlayStation’s MO when it comes to acquisitions has often been to pick up studios that it has previously worked with as exclusive second-party developers, from Guerrilla and Insomniac to, more recently, the likes of Housemarque and Bluepoint Games. Independent team Arrowhead Game Studios has, of course, recently joined the ranks of external teams that have had successful partnerships with Sony, thanks to the unexpected success of Helldivers 2, and recent rumours had begun claiming that, in keeping with its strategy, Sony had agreed an acquisition of Arrowhead as well.
