You might not think Pokemon teaming up with Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum would be something fans would be all that excited about, but that's where you'd be wrong. Pokemon revealed a line of products that included prints of the artist's paintings reimagined to include the likes of Snorlax and Sunflora, and best of all, a free Pikachu Van Gogh card with every purchase. Generating so much attention that the card was being resold for north of $120, Pokemon has reprinted the card en masse, and its second wave hits stores this weekend.
According to Pokebeach, Dutch retail chains Intertoys and MediaMarkt have announced they will be giving the card to customers who spend 30 euros or more this Saturday, February 24. When news about the second wave of cards first emerged, it was suggested as many as 100,000 cards would be available. Fresh estimates have hinted it may be far north of that, and even better for those desperate to own the card, there appears to be a third wave planned.
The two chains giving away the card this weekend have a combined 260 stores across the Netherlands. Each of those stores will get anywhere between 75 and 650 cards each, likely depending on the size of the store and the area it's situated. Primera and Bruna stores should also have the Pikachu card in stock this weekend, each location receiving as many as 75 cards, so it's probably safe to assume 100,000 cards may well have been a low estimate.
Especially when you account for a potential third wave. Pokebeach added that while not confirmed, it seems Intertoys will be holding another giveaway, possibly in two weeks. The price of the card on resale sites has plummeted and will likely continue to drop once the second and third waves of cards enter circulation. The card was selling for as much as $120 at its peak but has since dropped to around $60 and will only keep going down as thousands of cards are given away.
Despite the chaos surrounding the initial Van Gogh Pikachu card giveaway, Pokemon remains adamant it will keep running promotions like this one. This weekend it will kick off its Ceruledge card giveaway, a limited-time event being held to celebrate this year's Pokemon Day. There's also a new Pikachu card being given away in Indonesia which puts the mascot in a batik shirt.
