Each Thursday on Polygon we’ll have an open thread dedicated to helping you, our dear readers, find the perfect watch for this weekend. Looking for a sci-fi movie that will make you contemplate the wonders (or horrors) of the world? We’ve got you. Looking to brush up on world cinema? What about some comfort food? We’ve got you there, too.
From 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. EST, I will be in the comments section down below answering your questions and fielding requests for what you should watch this weekend.
A little bit about me, your curator for this week: I’m Pete Volk, our senior curation editor. I love movies of all stripes, but my main areas of interest are action movies (especially martial arts), classic Hollywood comedies (shout out to the GOAT, Ernst Lubitsch), and keeping up with new releases from around the world (I’ve tallied 152 2023 movies watched and 12 from 2024 so far).
Last week, I watched the Tak Sakaguchi meta-actioner One Percenter (a very wild ride with fantastic fight choreography), the Chantal Akerman romantic comedy A Couch in New York (a lovely, fun time), and rewatched Denzel Washington’s detective noir Devil in a Blue Dress (an old favorite and a perfect movie, to me). I also finished Monsieur Spade (an enjoyable hang but way too much plot for such a short show!). This week, I’m planning on watching Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom now that it’s on Max, and maybe Napoleon on Apple TV Plus.
I also want to give a quick shoutout to Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Monster, which is now available to rent at home. It is probably my favorite movie of 2023 (that distinction shifts daily, but it’s between this one and The Zone of Interest), and has not gotten the attention it richly deserves as a carefully crafted and extraordinarily executed mystery.

Temtem will not have major updates after this year
Crema has announced that following updates 1.7 and 1.8, Temtem will not have any more major updates. The team has already confirmed that there will be no more new islands, more Tems, or new additions to multiplayer. In a lengthy open letter, Crema stated the reasons as to why this is the case, and that there is a new project in development, that is not Temtem: Swarm, nor is it a full on sequel.
