It’s cold at the recording studio at Bandai Namco’s offices in Irvine, California. Tekken 8 producer Michael Murray and I are mic'd up, waiting for the go-ahead from the production team. We’re talking about the weather in the different places we’ve lived, the two American fighting game majors we’re representing (I’m wearing an EVO shirt; Michael is wearing a Combo Breaker hoodie), and Tekken. Lots and lots and lots of Tekken. We spent most of the prior day playing and talking about Tekken 8, but it’s always a little different doing it in front of a camera, and we wanted to be prepared.

Tekken 8's closed beta tests have been leakier than a sieve, as fans have been cracking them to play the game when they shouldn't be, and datamining them to leak vital information, including yet to be revealed character inclusions. Another beta test is scheduled to take place later this month, but thanks to Bandai Namco pushing the pre-load update out nine days early, it's already been cracked, and fans are playing the game over a week early.

“The tastiest drink in the world is coffee, or nothing!” says Azucena, Tekken’s newest character, when she runs into Lili. “I’ll teach you of the majesty that is tea!” Lili shoots back. It’s a dialogue exchange that only happens when these two characters go head-to-head, and in this case, it’s appropriate. Tekken producer Michael Murray is drinking coffee and playing Azucena. I’m drinking tea and playing Lili. Michael destroys me. I don’t often play Lili, and Michael is, unsurprisingly, a very good Tekken player. But even though I lost that match, I was having an absolute blast. We were laughing, complimenting strong moments in each other’s play, sharing surprise at certain interactions, and generally having a great time.

January 2024 will be literally loaded with games that gamers will have to pick and choose from to see what they play first or how many they’ll be able to afford. For the fighting game crowd, Bandai Namco is releasing Tekken 8 on January 26th, and they promise a visually stunning entry fueled by Unreal Engine 5 while also diving even deeper into the game’s story mode. At the Tokyo Game Show, producers Katsuhiro Harada and Michael Murray did a special stream of the title so they could drop details for fans. Many of these were about the story mode, but we also got some key gameplay details.

Earlier this week, we got a brand new trailer for Tekken 8, which featured a bunch of previously unannounced characters such as Yoshimitsu, Dragunov, Shaheen, and a few more. We also got to see fan favorite character Kuma, who's rocking a different outfit from when we last saw him in Tekken 7. On the surface, it looks like Kuma is wearing a cute little vest and a headband, but the outift might look a little bit familiar if you're a longtime fan of the series.

EVO 2023 has come and gone over the weekend and there was some new revealed for Tekken 8. Unfortunately, that news is not a release date as that has yet to be given for the title. However, a returning fighter and a brand new fighter were revealed, as only returning fighters have been announced so far. Harada and Michael Murray would make these announcements on stage during the EVO 2023 event. These two additions also go along with the addition of fighter Claudio Serafino that was added just a few weeks ago. These two gameplay trailers also show off some unannounced stage locations, and some of these really bring out the detail of the Unreal Engine 5.

Tekken 8's second Closed Network Test took place last weekend, which unfortunately means that hackers have now had time to crack the beta and play the game during unauthorized hours. It's something that Bandai Namco isn't best pleased about, issuing a warning to players that they may get hit with a ban if they're found to have played a cracked version of the game. That wasn't enough for Tekken 8 director Katsuhiro Harada though, who recently bust into someone's stream and told them off himself.

When it comes to fighting games, one of the main highlights is the various fighters using different styles to differentiate themselves from each other. If everyone fought the same way, it would get rather boring as it wouldn’t have anything “fresh” to do as you went from character to character. Tekken 8 is coming soon, and it will be at San Diego Comic-Con to show off some things. More than likely, we’ll get a new trailer and character reveals. But in their panel called “The Art of Fighting,” they’ll talk about the fighting styles they use in the game alongside fighting legends. One such legend at the panel will be “Iron” Mike Tyson!
