Atlus has announced that its next game, Metaphor: ReFantazio, will launch on October 11 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. 

Metaphor: ReFantazio might not be a Persona game, but developer Atlus is keeping up a trend solidified by its beloved JRPG series by making its user interface absolutely gorgeous, and fans say it's a great example of why UI designers deserve to be paid generously.

As one of the Treehouse's resident Atlus sickos, I was incredibly happy to wake up to 25-minutes of Metaphor: ReFantazio's director Katsura Hashino talking us through some new footage. We get a look at a new rural town and the activities you can get up to, like bounty hunting. Travel on your magic mech is compared to "camping", which I wasn't expecting. And there's lots of combat on show, with transitions from real-time to turn-based battles outlined in a bit more detail. Oh and it's coming out in October, which gives me plenty of time to clear my JRPG backlog before this inevitably takes over my entire existence for the foreseeable.

Atlus first teased that it was working on a new RPG with a fantasy setting in mid-2023 — it also said way back then that it will be available sometime this year. Now, the developer has revealed that the game, Metaphor: ReFantazio, will come out on October 11 at a special livestream event. Katsura Hashino, the director of the game, as well as of Persona 3, 4 and 5, also introduced a 30-minute hands-on gameplay that gives you quite a lengthy look at its story and combat mechanics. Similar to the Persona games, Metaphor: ReFantazio has a turn-based combat system with what Atlus says is a «blend of real-time action.»

Atlus recently announced that Metaphor: ReFantazio, the next big role-playing game from Persona 5 director Katsura Hashino, would receive a showcase on April 22nd, 3 PM PT. In a separate tweet (translated from DeepL), Studio Zero revealed that it will run for 30 minutes, with the developer sharing “the appeal of this title with the world.”

Atlus has announced a special event taking place on April 22, where there will be a special livestream event focused on the upcoming Metaphor: ReFantazio. Metaphor: ReFantazio is a brand-new RPG IP from Atlus' Studio Zero, with the game being developed by the same staff who had worked on the modern Persona entries. Both Metaphor and Persona share the same DNA in terms of mechanics, having similar social simulation and RPG dungeon crawling mechanics. The main difference between the two is that Metaphor is a high-fantasy setting as opposed to Persona's urban fantasy.

ATLUS will host the “ATLUS Exclusive: Metaphor: ReFantazio – April 23, 2024″ broadcast on April 22 at 3:00 p.m. PT / 6:00 p.m. ET / 7:00 JST, the company announced (2). You will be able to watch it on YouTube in English and Japanese.

I'm not normally in a rush to post marketing videos in which developers talk about how great their new game is, but I need all the help I can get in understanding Metaphor: ReFantazio. The new RPG from the makers of Persona looks stylish, dense, exciting, and almost entirely baffling in its trailers, so 14 minutes of the folks from Atlus just describing it is welcome.

A new rumor has come up in relation to The Game Awards.

Another major title has been confirmed for The Game Awards 2023. The event’s producer and host Geoff Keighley recently took to Twitter to confirm that Metaphor: ReFantazio will “have something to show” during the showcase tomorrow.

The thing about gaming history is that you often don’t know what’s really happening behind the scenes unless it’s being told to you after the fact. For example, if a company is struggling, you don’t know about it until it is shuttered or bought out by a bigger publisher. And when a company is riding high, you’ll hear about it because of all the projects they’re putting out thanks to the capital they now have. Atlus is an excellent example of that, as they’re booming and getting ready to release games like Persona 3 Reload. But it wasn’t always that way.

As is tradition, Sega and Atlus will be at the Tokyo Game Show 2023, which runs from September 21st to 24th. However, they’re hosting a “special” broadcast on September 21st at 3 AM PT. The Sega New broadcast will feature details on all the “newest titles” from both companies, lasting about 50 minutes.
