As the Dune 2 popcorn bucket and the Talk to Me smoking bowlprove, movie tie-in products are getting more and more ridiculous in the best way. Cosmetic retailer Lush has released a limited-edition bath bomb for U.K. shoppers only (sorry, Americans) called “Saltbomb.” It’s clearly inspired by Emerald Fennell’s evocative Saltburn, a black comedy psychological thriller that’s gone viral over its unhinged acts of sexual yearning. In particular, the Saltbomb is meant to evoke onevivid scene involving used bathwater.
Saltburn, the 2023 movie about a young man who slurps up bathtub cum water, has become a surprise flashpoint for internet fandom. The new movie from writer-director Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) follows Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan), a seemingly docile and underprivileged Oxford University student who spends a summer at the palatial estate of his staggeringly rich, popular classmate Felix (Priscilla star Jacob Elordi). Since its release last November, the movie has become known for its shocking scenes and its twisted central relationship, which has inspired an enormous fan base online.
The festive period is finally upon us, and what better time is there to kick back on the sofa and work through your watch list? As usual, too, this Christmas is jam-packed full of great new releases on streaming, meaning that there will be plenty to keep you occupied after stuffing yourself with turkey. Among the highlights are a festive Doctor Who special to kick off Ncuti Gatwa's season as the Time Lord as well as Zack Snyder's hugely-anticipated new sci-fi adventure, Rebel Moon Part One.
Preparing to play one of the most iconic couples in music history comes with a fair amount of pressure, as Priscilla’s lead Cailee Spaeny knows all too well. Add to this the tight shooting schedules and limited budget of Sofia Coppola’s biopic charting Elvis and Priscilla Presley’s marriage, and the challenge only grows.
Saltburn has shaped up as one of 2023’s most divisive love-it-or-hate-it movies. Emerald Fennell’s follow-up to her 2020 writer-director debut, Promising Young Woman, is radically different from that movie in look and tone, but her talent for pushing boundaries and demanding a response is still front and center, and Saltburn is the kind of button-pusher that generally either thrills people or makes them angry. Critics have responded both ways: “Superficially smart and deeply stupid,” Mick LaSalle grumps in the San Francisco Chronicle, while Entertainment Weekly’s Maureen Lee Lenker calls it “a triumph of the cinema of excess, in all its orgiastic, unapologetic glory.”
Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has some thoughts on who she would cast to play Bella and Edward if Twilight was ever remade. The names on her wish list? Oh, just two of the biggest rising stars today...
As the environmental, political, and above all, economic tension between the ultra-rich and the rest of the world continues to grow, it’s a topic that keeps driving dark, memorable movies — from Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winner Parasite to 2022’s The Menu, Pig, and Triangle of Sadness to a sub-track at the 2023 Fantastic Fest film festival, including this year’s Nick Stahl movie What You Wish For and the blistering Brazilian movie Property. Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn, which played as a secret screening at Fantastic Fest, seems to fit the bill perfectly as well: It follows an Oxford freshman, Oliver (Barry Keoghan, sure to turn up in awards-season conversation again) as he awkwardly infiltrates the social circle of his ultra-rich classmate Felix Catton (Priscillaco-star Jacob Elordi). What follows is part horror movie, part classic Gothic novel, as Oliver hungers to be like Felix — or just to be Felix.
David Corenswet is getting swole for Superman: Legacy.
Euphoria star has revealed that he chose not to audition for the role of the iconic DC superhero Clark Kent/Superman.
While Elvis was all about the King of Rock and Roll, Sofia Coppola’s latest shifts its focus to Priscilla Presley, a schoolgirl who gets wrapped up in Elvis Presley’s orbit at the age of just 14.
Sofia Coppola brings a delicate touch to Priscilla, the A24 biopic of Priscilla Presley (née Beaulieu), who married Elvis Presley in 1967 and separated from him six years later. The movie runs out of steam in its final act, due to a scattered structure aimed more at tracing a real-world chronology than following character drama through to its most rigorous emotional outcomes. But until that point, it’s kept afloat by Coppola’s gentle conception of Priscilla’s story, which she unfurls through a pair of brilliant, alluring performances.
In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, director Sofia Coppola revealed that the production budget for Priscilla was so tight that at one point she considered raffling off a pickleball game with her star Jacob Elordi, in order to raise funds for additional shooting days. Imagine that, a real-life 'win a date with Tad Hamilton' scenario with Euphoria actor.
