Overwatch 2's newest hero, Mauga, could be exactly what fans want

If you’ve been playing My Hero Ultra Rumble you may have noticed some players with a little extra flare about them. And by flare, we mean that in the literal sense.

is adding a new hero to its roster starting in Season 8, and this one has an extra dose of personality for players to enjoy. Mauga is a Samoan tank with a heavy backstory and powerful abilities. The announcement came during BlizzCon 2023 and Mauga was playable for that weekend only as a limited-time bonus trial run that was designed to go along with the event. Luckily, anyone who missed out doesn't have long to wait, as both Mauga and his guns are being added to the game permanently in just a few weeks.

People who play videogames want "new content literally almost every single day", according to Blizzard president Mike Ybarra - indeed, "they want new stuff every day, every hour". I do not want new stuff every day, every hour, Mike. Frankly, the idea makes me want to burn my possessions and go spend the rest of my life under a pine tree.

Blizzard Entertainment has revealed the next three heroes of Overwatch 2, including Mauga, a new duel-wielding tank hero that hits the game next month. Plus, the Overwatch 2 team teased a new DPS hero and Support hero hitting the roster sometime down the line. 

The Overwatch team did something unprecedented at this weekend’s BlizzCon. Not only did they reveal new tank hero Mauga (and made him immediately playable for everyone during a weekend trial), developers showed off two more heroes coming to Overwatch 2 in 2024. They even teased a third, another tank, who won’t come to the game until season 14.

At BlizzCon 2023's opening ceremony, Blizzard announced Mauga as the 39th hero to be added to Overwatch 2 with the upcoming Season 8. A damage-based tank hailing from Samoa, Mauga was available to try both at home and at the event itself; we played a few games and discussed our first impressions here.

Well, it appears there’s more of a link between the two than just a passing resemblance, as Mauga directly references Maui in his voice lines.

Blizzard revealed the latest hero to join the ever-growing roster of its shooter Overwatch 2 at Blizzcon 2023. During an interview at the convention, Polygon got more details about Mauga, what players can expect from him, and the process of creating a new tank.
