Google on Tuesday took the wraps off its highly anticipated next-generation foundation model called Gemini. Google claims that it has tested the benchmarks of the Gemini model against those of GPT-4, and the company claims that its AI modal has defeated OpenAI's LLM in 30 out of 32 benchmarks, including reasoning, math, reading comprehension, and Python code generation. The company has already integrated one of the models, Gemini Pro, into Google Bard, further improving its capabilities. Two days have passed since it launched and now that people have had a chance to try Google's latest AI innovation, it has drawn both positive and negative reactions from experts and users on social media platforms.

Google Gemini was unveiled by Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and the company's AI research division DeepMind's CEO Demis Hassabis yesterday, December 6. Leaving PaLM-2 behind, it has now become the largest large language model released by the company so far. With its size, it also gains new capabilities. Being a multimodal AI model, its highest variant, Gemini Ultra, is capable of responding with text, images, videos, and audio, pushing the boundaries of what a general-purpose foundation model can do. A small research group recently examined the performance of 25 AI 'people', using two large language models created by OpenAI, in an online Turing test. None of the AI bots ultimately passed the test, but all the GPT 3.5 ones were so bad that a chatbot from the mid-1960s was nearly twice as successful as passing off as a human.
