Until April 7, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can claim the free horror movie The Mist for their digital libraries. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate perks change regularly, and while they are mostly focused on giving away free content for live service games, sometimes they give away free movies as well.
In fact, multiple horror movies have been given away as Xbox Game Pass Ultimate perks over the years, including one in the build-up to last year's Halloween. As Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers may recall, they had the opportunity to claim Texas Chainsaw 3D for free this past October. Now there's yet another free horror movie for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers to claim, and one that is held in much higher regard than Texas Chainsaw 3D.
The Frank Darabont-directed horror movie The Mist, based on the Stephen King novella of the same name, is free right now for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. Anyone interested in claiming the movie should do so by April 7. The film itself was well-received by critics, earning a 71% rating on RottenTomatoes, which is pretty impressive for horror movies, as they tend to struggle more with professional critics than other genres. The Mist has become even more popular since it first came out, as it features multiple actors who would go on to star in The Walking Dead and because its ending has left such an impression on people.
The rest of this article has SPOILERS for The Mist
Some have said that The Mist has one of the most shocking endings in horror movie history, and for good reason. For those unfamiliar with the film, The Mist is about a strange, monster-filled mist that descends upon a small town. A group of townspeople takes shelter at a local grocery store, and find themselves at odds with each other as well as the creatures in the mist. Eventually, the main character David, his son Billy, and a handful of other survivors attempt to flee in a vehicle.
Unfortunately, they run out of gas and find themselves stranded in the mist. The survivors decide to kill themselves instead of facing the horrors of the mist, but there are five of them and only four bullets. David uses the four bullets to kill the other survivors, including his eight-year-old son Billy. David then accepts his fate of being brutally murdered by the creatures, but the military suddenly arrives to save the day. Basically, David killed his friends and son for no reason, and had they waited only a few moments longer, they would have all been saved. Now David has to live with the fact that he killed his son and three other people for no reason, which is why The Mist ending is still remembered to this day.
