The London Final Fantasy Fan Fest has kicked off this morning with an impressive keynote speech that has finally unveiled one of the two jobs expected for the upcoming Dawntrail expansion. A few months ago during the Las Vegas Fan Fest, players around the world were teased a bit of information that there would be two new jobs added with the inclusion of the new expansion. At the time, speculations were all over the place as players came up with various theories — it didn’t help that FFXIV director Naoki Yoshida wore a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shirt at the time of said announcement which then prompted players to try and line up the letters like some kind of nerdy anagram. From Corsairs to Time Mages, all kinds of speculation arose. Carefully observant Warriors of Light may have noticed a tease of the potential melee job when watching the Dawntrail trailer, but it wasn’t enough detail to solidify good guesses.
This morning, Director Yoshida (lovingly referred to as Yoshi-P by fans) put all the speculations to rest with the release of details about one of the two jobs to expect. With a flourish of dual-wielded steel, the Viper arises from its nest to hunt. Not pulling from previous Final Fantasy works, this Viper class is a completely original job for the franchise. Featuring dual-wielding blades that can combine into a single double-bladed lance, the Viper is flashy and quick with its move-set. The newly released trailer for the job showcases the Viper’s basic melee combo with what looks like some gauge-based attacks that finally lead into what looks like the job’s unique Limit Break 3 animations.
According to the keynote details about the job, Viper will not exactly dual wield in the same way as Ninja, since the two swords can be combined into one. However, the Viper will share the same gear class as Ninja and will be a Scouting Class. This makes a lot of sense when looking at the job’s quick, flourishing movements. Very much like the previously added jobs after A Realm Reborn, there will be no prerequisite job needed to pick up Viper. Viper will start at level 80, so it does give players the opportunity to go through Main Scenario Quests if they decide to level it to 90 (the new expansion will see the level cap increase to 100). Eager fans will hopefully be placated by this unveiling, as we still have to wait for details about the other job class — set to be unveiled at the Tokyo Final Fantasy Fan Fest. Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail has been confirmed to release in Summer 2024.
