NetEase has announced a new open-world urban-set RPG. The new game, with the working title Project Mugen, was revealed as part of Gamescom.
Thunder Fire Studio subsidiary Naked Rain is working on the game, as well as an international team from Hangzhou and Montreal. Planned as a free-to-play, open world RPG, Highlighting the cityscapes that the game is set in, as well as what they're claiming to be rich lore.
There's a new trailer showing off some of the game's setting in various cities and locations, and some of the action that you can expect. Thunder Fire Studio’s senior marketing director Riten Huang describes some of the goals shaping what they’re bringing to life:
“Project Mugen is our love letter to urban fantasies. We wanted to create a world that players could relate to, yet find enough mysteries to keep them coming back. The city is alive, and every player will have their unique journey through it.”
All of this takes place on a world that is similar to Earth where urban legends and people’s fantasies become part of reality. There are also other supernatural elements in this world. Your character is known as an Esper, and also the “Infinite Trigger”. As part of your job, you’ll get to travel to various cities to investigate various anomalies and other supernatural happenings. You’ll be able to team up with other Espers, who have their own stories. Naturally, there is a huge threat, Chaos, that endangers humanity, and guess who's going to help try and save the world.
Project Mugen will see you “embark on a quest to recover lost memories, confront challenges in various distinct cities, and work to unlock the key to saving the world”, as well as grow and make memories with your companions. The initial trailer is made from in-game footage, and the stylized, sometimes colorful, sometimes grittier urban environments look promising.
Pre-registration has already opened for those who are interested in more on the game. You can head to the Project Mugen site for more details and to sign up

Wow, watch out HoYoverse, eh? Teased earlier in the month, Chinese juggernaut Netease Games has announced a new, upcoming PS5 and PS4 open world named Project Mugen – and its debut trailer will almost certainly drop your jaws. While it leans heavily into gacha tropes – those waifu character designs have been purpose built to empty your wallets, after all – the gameplay on display is seriously impressive, showcasing Spider-Man-like swinging, flashy combat, and even vehicular exploration. The game will be available to download for free, and you can pre-register your interest on its official website through here.

Project Mugen is probably a title that not a lot of you will be aware of. It's a new open-world anime RPG that was revealed during this year's Gamescom event by developer Naked Rain and publisher NetEase Games. Despite having only been revealed fairly recently, this unassuming title has been making waves on social media, mostly because it allows characters to use webs to travel quickly across the game's world.
