After spending the last few weeks roasting Megan Fox for her performance as Nitara in Mortal Kombat 1, fans are taking a dreaded look back at Ronda Rousey's infamous portrayal of Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat 11.
Mortal Kombat 1's Stryker Is Still A Cop

Stryker is one of the more questionable Mortal Kombat characters. His entire premise is that he's a trigger-happy cop on a power trip, with one of his MK9 fatalities even making light of police brutality. Given that his look was stripped back with much of the police memorabilia removed in MK1, it seemed as though NetherRealm was distancing itself from this depiction. Nope, he's still a cop.
He's not a fully-fledged fighter in MK1, but he does appear as a kameo. When you summon him to attack your enemies, red and blue lights will flash alongside a blaring siren, like he's just strolled in on the scene in his cruiser after you dialled 911. Once he's on the stage, he'll tase, handcuff, and shoot the other fighter and even whip out his stun baton to shatter their ribs. He might not look as distinctly 'cop' as his past iterations, but not much has changed.

One of his fatalities starts with the police car siren going off again before he attaches a bomb vest to the other fighter and pulls the trigger. He also has a brutality called "Busted" in which he blinds the enemy with a flashlight before tasing them and shooting their head off. This is the same as his MK9 fatality in which he says, "Police brutality coming up", though that line is understandably absent in MK1.
With increased awareness of police brutality, corruption, and disproportionate violence towards Black people across the world, and with anti-police sentiments rising and trust worsening, many believed Stryker would never return. He's a controversial character whose entire shtick is police brutality, being a hyperviolent cop who uses his gun and taser without thinking. The only way many saw him returning was via a massive overhaul, changing his story and making him... not a cop.
He doesn't have much of a backstory beyond being an incredibly violent police officer who can also fight hand-to-hand, hence why Raiden roped him into the tournament, so to get rid of that would be to get rid of his character. Hence, why so many thought NetherRealm would simply shelve him and leave him in the past. But when he was announced for MK1, we saw him in a blue and white shirt with a backward cap and no police badge or SWAT gear.
Regardless, he's the same character he's always been, even if he's not as obviously dressed for the part. Stryker is a police officer with a tendency for violence that feels out of touch and incredibly insensitive.
