Are you playing Mortal Kombat 1 on Steam? Have you noticed that your free drive space has been disappearing without obvious cause and at a potentially alarming pace? If so, there's good news, or at least an explanation that will help you deal with it: It turns out that Mortal Kombat 1's crash logs are really big.
A crash log is a file generated when a game craps out that provides a record of data like when it happened, what you were doing, and what else your PC was running when it happened. Developers use crash logs to figure out why a game isn't working like it's supposed to, so they can track down and fix whatever problem ails it. These files are typically very small, because in most cases they're just a dump of raw text, largely indecipherable to non-programmers.
In the case of Mortal Kombat 1, though, it seems that something has gone wrong. Back in September, a Steam user by the name of LouRagou reported that the automatically generated crash logs were sucking up about 1GB of drive space each, an absolutely astonishing (and inexcusable) amount of storage for such a thing.
The claim went almost entirely unremarked, though, until earlier this week, when LouRagou posted about another, separate crashdumps folder that's also eating up a huge amount of data, pushing the lost storage per crash total even higher. That was noticed and shared on Twitter by X_Azeez, and quickly sparked replies from other MK1 owners who were shocked to discover the same thing.
Everytime MK1 crashes on PC, it creates a report automatically, and stores 1GB of space for each report LOL.Images provided by @divine_hat pic.twitter.com/VjGC0a5lZ6October 17, 2023
Naturally, the amount of space lost to crash logs is dependent entirely on how often your game crashes. If you're enjoying a nice, stable experience, you may not notice anything is wrong at all. If, on the other hand, you might end up like this guy:
The good news is that these crash logs aren't essential to the game, so you can just pop into the appropriate folder and delete them en masse. (Although I would recommend moving rather than deleting them, just in case. I don't want to be responsible for destroying your MK1 install.) Those folders are:
The bad news is that anyone not aware of this particular issue is stuck wondering where the hell all their hard drive space is going—not necessarily the trickiest troubleshooting problem in the world to sort out, but a headache and time-waster that nobody needs. (Especially since, seriously, why are the crash logs so big?)
Warner Bros. community manager Cory Taylor said in response to X_Azeez's tweet that he's «reported this to our team and they're looking into it ASAP.» There's been no further word on the problem, so for now,

NetherRealm Studios and WB Games recently debuted gameplay footage for Mortal Kombat 1’s first DLC character, Invincible’s Omni-Man, though it seems the DLC will be omitting something that past DLC additions to Mortal Kombat games have not.
A new gameplay trailer has been released showing off the upcoming Omni-Man DLC, which is inspired by the Invincible comic book and Prime Video adult animated series and features the voice of actor J. K. Simmons. It will be released on November 9 as the first playable character in the Kombat Pack.
Mortal Kombat 1’s first DLC character, Omni-Man, is available to download from November 9, Warner Bros. Games and developer NetherRealm have announced.
NetherRealm Studios has a big new update available for Mortal Kombat 1, which adds a long-request quality-of-life feature: tagging moves. Players can now tag moves from the Move List to the screen, making it easier to practice them. The Move Last will also remember if Advanced View is enabled and return to the last used tab.
Mortal Kombat 1 recently released to some great reviews, and while fans are generally having a great time with the game – not every decision has been met with a positive response. A recent update to the game had a patch note stating “Halloween Fatality added to the Premium Store”, but no such fatalities were found within the game itself.
Xbox spills the beans on when the Invincible villain joins the MK1 roster.
Mortal Kombat 1 is set in a new timeline written by Fire God Liu Kang, which means certain relationships and identities have changed. Kuai Liang is now Scorpion, Mileena and Kitana are sisters, and Tarkatan is a disease, not a people. That leaves the question of where the Kombat Kids fit in, but leakers may have found the answer in datamined DLC voice lines which were proven true by the Omni-Man trailer.
If you are playing the PC version of Mortal Kombat 1 and have experienced crashes, you might be surprised to learn that NetherRealm's latest fighting game leaves an extra digital footprint on your PC as it takes up more space on your hard-drive.
Some Mortal Kombat 1 players have theorised that the game was originally supposed to be Injustice 3 and that it was changed mid-development, but there's more evidence against that theory than there is for it.
Mortal Kombat 1 crashes create a report file on your hard drive, which in some cases can occupy an enormous amount of space. Multiple reports from MK1 PC players (on both Steam and other platforms), as well as PCGamesN’s own investigation, confirm that every time Mortal Kombat 1 crashes on your PC, a new report folder is created. The more crashes your game experiences, the more folders are made, with some players reporting up to 70 GB of hard drive space being consumed by numerous crash files. A community manager for WB Games, which publishes NetherRealms’ Mortal Kombat 1, says the issue has been reported and that the MK1 team is “looking at it ASAP.”
When Blizzard stated that the Gold Rewards from Whisper Caches would be greatly increased, players were not expecting to receive hundreds of thousands of Gold before even hitting level 10.
