Monster Hunter Rise no longer works on Steam Deck hardware, after its latest update added new DRM software.
The game previously used Denuvo anti-tamper technology, but the latest version 16.0.2.0 update reportedly removes it and, as noted by modder FluffyQuack, replaces it with the controversial Enigma Protector DRM.
Enigma had been added to Resident Evil Revelations earlier this month, but Capcom was forced to revert the update and remove the DRM after players complained about performance issues.
Now the DRM has been added to the Steam version of Monster Hunter Rise and it appears to be causing issues again.
The game’s Steam page has been hit with a number of negative reviews, with its usual ‘Very Positive’ review summary reduced to ‘Mixed’.
Many of these reviews note that the game will now no longer run on Steam Deck, with players blaming the addition of Enigma (though there’s no definitive proof this is the exact reason, as opposed to another issue with the same update).
“Capcom added Enigma DRM to this game (and are slowly doing this with their whole catalog), which has reduced performance and broke the game on Steam Deck,” reads a review from user Scheme, who had 30 hours of play on record before now.
“It is baffling that they didn’t even test Steam Deck compatibility, given that they advertise their support for it. Even more baffling when they just did this exact same thing two weeks prior with Resident Evil Revelations and also had to pull the patch until they could fix it.”
Capcom has posted an update on the game’s Steam update log, acknowledging that the latest update has indeed broken the game on Steam Deck.
“We have confirmed an issue preventing the game from running on Steam Deck,” the notice reads.
“There have been reports of the game not running on Steam Deck after updating to Ver.16.0.2.0. The dev team is currently investigating this issue. We will let you know as soon as we find out more, so please hold on for further information. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”
The update alsoremoves some of the crossover DLC from the game, including collaborations with Sonic the Hedgehog, Universal Studios Japan, and Sengan-en.
