March 15 is going to be a sad day for VR players as Meta is pulling three popular exclusive titles,,, and the latter's sequel, from its platform. This comes as part of a broader decision by Meta to cease support for several VR titles.
As reported by , Meta has reached out to all owners of the beloved free virtual reality pet app,, to inform them that all support for the game will cease across all Meta platforms starting Friday, March 15, 2024, at 11:59 PM PT. Redditor First-Ingenuity shared a screenshot of the Meta Quest team's email, simply asking "" as its wording suggests the game will not be playable at all after this time, despite the title not having any dependency on having an internet connection to be played.
The popular multiplayer shooter titles, and will meet the same fate on March 15, but unlike , which was free to play, these games cost $20 to purchase, and there's no sign of a refund scheme in place. While the Meta Quest team didn't offer any explanation in its emails to customers about why it's pulling support for these titles, many have speculated that with and being launch titles for the original Meta (then Oculus) Quest, that upcoming operating system updates will render the games incompatible with the Meta VR devices.
Responding to First-Ingenuity's post, a Reddit user called CuriousChimp suggested that this is one of the reasons behind being pulled, claiming that they were part of the team that worked on the game, and that "". CuriousChimp also cited that there isn't a team to support anymore, and while they wish Meta preserved their history, a few of the people behind have moved on to developing a new virtual creature game at Windup Minds that builds upon their work on .
It is a shame Meta has made the decision to pull these games entirely, especially with paid titles such as. Hopefully, as the company looks to the future of its VR platform, it will have more options in place for backwards compatibility to ensure better game preservation.
