The original Legend of Legacy was a bit of a hidden gem on the 3DS and is in many ways, a perfect choice for a remaster despite being a game released in the last decade as it was a throwback-influenced game upon release. The shift of franchises like Final Fantasy to more action-oriented gameplay left a gaping hole in the market for players who loved the FF series due to its turn-based nature. The industry moving away from turn-based fantasy games led to a lot of developers taking it easy on players, but Legend of Legacy aimed to challenge players who grew up on JRPGs instead of making things too easy.
With seven different characters to play as overall and three to start with, the cast gains XP in battles – but only if they’re in battles actively. A lot of games opt to increase everyone’s strength in-line, but not this one – and it forced you to always try out different characters for battle even if they weren’t your favorites. It’s an interesting mechanic because it’s not going to be for everyone, but it leads to you having to expand your normal comfort zone in an RPG.
The cast has the ability to start off with a class-based role to an extent but can grow into a different role over time – allowing for everyone to be as well-rounded as you want them to be. The world offers a lot of exploration and dungeon-crawling and allows for missions to be taken on to find loot and new monsters over time. Like a few classic RPGs, players can avoid combat just by avoiding enemies or you can opt to just tackle every foe and test your skills at all times. The parties are arranged in a grid and you can attack, defend or use items alongside charms that enable powerful spells to deal out a lot of damage. The remaster takes the game from the 240p original on the 3DS to being full HD now with a massive increase in detail for everything.
NIS America has released the first gameplay-centric trailer of the remaster and it’s a perfect introduction to the game’s systems as a whole. The Legend of Legacy HD Remastered is set for release across all consoles and PC on March 22, 2024. This getting an HD release is fantastic for anyone who loved Alliance Alive HD on consoles or PC because its origins are in Legend of Legacy – with some gameplay systems being switched up for Alliance Alive.
