If you, like me, immediately regret any decision you’ve ever made - well, at least in terms of video games - and have found yourself longing for a different face to stare at for hours and hours of conversations in Baldur's Gate 3, there might be good news on the way. Larian has teased that it’s working on a future way to change your appearance in its hugely popular D&D game.
The current inability to change your character appearance in Baldur’s Gate 3 is perhaps a strange one, giving the freedom provided by the rest of the RPG, from shagging bears (and pretty much anyone/thing you meet) to surrounding NPCs with explosive barrels before turning them into a bunch of warmed-through goop. Even the game’s character creation is replete with a welcome buffet of options, from genitals to gender, and you can respec your class, spells and cantrips.
All this is to say that it’s a noticeably odd omission that you can’t change how your character looks once you’re past character creation - not just in terms of their actual physical appearance, but even more cosmetic things like hair, makeup and piercings.
That might change in the future, if a tweet from Larian’s publishing director Michael Douse is anything to go by. (Well spotted, PC Gamer.)
Douse replied to Twitterer TheTrustedTitan’s desperate plea to “please let me change how i look in the game. I'm BEGGING!!!!” by teasing: “Things are being cooked”.
Things are being cooked
Larian’s previous game Divinity: Original Sin 2 allowed characters to freely change their appearance after the game’s first act by visiting a mirror in their home base. (The only things you couldn’t change were your character’s race and gender, and even the former could be sidestepped eventually using the Mask of the Shapeshifter item.) As such, it would make sense for Baldur’s Gate 3 to eventually add a similar option to change your character’s appearance once you’re into the game.
With no word on when such an option might arrive now, though, you’ll have to put up with staring into the eyes of your tiefling warlock for a few dozen more hours for the time being. Not even savescumming can help you there, I'm afraid.

Amazing news for RPG fans on Xbox who’ve been patiently waiting for the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 — Larian Studios boss Swen Vincke has confirmed that the title will be launching on Xbox Series X|S this year.
Baldur's Gate III is arguably the game of the summer, and it isn't even out on consoles yet. Developer Larian Studios has taken a "it'll be out when it's ready" approach to releasing the game on various platforms. After becoming an instant hit on Windows when it came out of early access earlier this month, Baldur's Gate III will land on PlayStation 5 and macOS on September 6th. The exact Xbox release date is still unclear, but Larian has finally confirmed the massive RPG will come to Microsoft's consoles later this year.
Larian Studios will bring Baldur’s Gate 3 to Xbox Series X (and Series S) later this year, the studio’s creative director, Swen Vincke, confirmed Thursday. That’s good news for players on Xbox who have been waiting for news on the Dungeons & Dragons game, as until recently it seemed like they would have to wait until 2024.
There is quite a bit of anticipation and excitement for September. We have two significant releases happening on the same day, and it will hopefully provide a thrilling RPG experience for both Xbox and PlayStation fans. As you might already know, September 6, 2023, is bringing out both Starfield on Xbox Series X/S and PC, while Sony PlayStation 5 fans are getting a copy of Baldur’s Gate 3. However, there was some concern online recently that Baldur’s Gate 3 might be in a bit of trouble.
Baldur's Gate 3 will offer parity with patches between PC and PS5 platforms because it's "the consumer-friendly thing to do."
While the wait for Baldur's Gate 3 has been an interminable one, an advantage to having to endure a month of PC players tearing it apart is that aspects of the game that really need improving are being detected and actioned by developer Larian Studios. One quite baffling missing feature is the ability to change how your character looks (outside of equipment), which you cannot currently do after character creation, not even their hairstyle.
Baldur's Gate III is prepared to receive its first patch and by the looks of it, it seems like a huge one. Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke confirmed a roadmap on Twitter, promising to fix issues and make relevant tweaks to ability balances, based on user suggestions. First up, is hotfix #4, which would make some emergency fixes to crashes and progressions blocks, in addition to any bugs that hinder the general interface. That will be followed by the massive patch, boasting over 1,000 fixes, followed by patch 2, which will ‘incorporate some requests.' It's unclear what those requests could be, but we already know that the team is planning an update that would let players change their character's appearance mid-game.
It doesn't take a lot for your party in Baldur's Gate 3 to get down and dirty. No, I don't mean it in that way, but I suppose that's true as well. Putting that aside for now - hygiene. The Baldur's Gate 3 gang certainly struggles to maintain it. Thankfully, players have found a solution that doesn't require resting every five minutes.
Baldur’s Gate 3 players will soon have the ability to change the way that their character looks mid-game.
Baldur's Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 is not only my favorite RPG game of all time, but it’s hands-down the greatest gameplay experience that I’ve ever had. Larian Studios recently released the Dungeons & Dragons-inspired game out of early access, and it has since been flying through every chart imaginable. Among the vast variety of features found in Baldur’s Gate 3, character appearance changes are nowhere to be found. Larian Studios has just confirmed that they are indeed working on implementing such a system, though.
