Steam Next Fest is upon us, giving us access to a slew of demos for upcoming games. It’s a good idea to check it out if you’re curious about what’s bubbling in the PC gaming world. One of the demos present in the fest is Jusant, which is an odd title by Life is Strange developer Don’t Nod.
Jusant gets a lot of things right. It sets a quiet, meditative atmosphere without boring you to sleep. The gameplay is also constantly engaging while not overwhelming you with stimuli. It’s not a perfect game by any measure, but it is a pleasant indication that Don’t Nod is experimenting in the right direction.
It’s hard to shove the game into a single genre. It could be called a climbing sim, but there are too many arcadey elements for that to feel accurate. There are environmental puzzles, but they aren’t presented in the typical manner. It’s also got adventure elements, and despite not pushing the graphical envelope, you’re treated to some gorgeous scenery.
Much like Death Stranding, your main opponent is the terrain though this time you’re a climber traversing a treacherous tower. The tower throws several obstacles your way, and you’ll have to use your brains and available tools to help you overcome the challenges.
In the demo, you’re given a climbing rope that saves your life in case you ever fall. You can also place pitons to pin the rope to the tower at several points, and these points serve as checkpoints that reduce the amount of work you’ll have to redo if you lose your grip.
Your left and right triggers control the protagonist’s left and right arms respectively, and you use them to ascend rocks and ladders. You can also leap to reach nearby ledges, though you have a limited reserve of stamina so you have to do this wisely.
It’s a clever game that makes the most of very simple elements. The route forward isn’t always obvious, forcing you to do a little thinking and exploration to figure out how to progress. Sometimes, to go up, you have to go down first.
Jusant isn’t entirely relaxed either. Even in the demo, there were some heart-stopping moments, such as when I had to do a wall run to get from one ledge to the next.
Jusant doesn’t rely on dialog to tell its story. Instead, you’re left to piece together the tale through environmental storytelling and occasional notes you find lying around. Though the plot isn’t in the foreground, there is enough there to keep you curious as you climb.
You shouldn’t be fooled into thinking Jusant is entirely unique. It’s not the first game to have you battling against the environment primarily, and its “show don’t tell” style of revealing its plot is reminiscent of cryptic games such as Journey. Jusant‘s meditative atmosphere is also part of the increasingly

Square Enix has revealed several new announcements at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2023 in London as part of a deeper look into its upcoming expansion, Dawntrail. Nintendo has never been above doing whatever it takes to promote one of their video games or offering fans a chance to win some cool prizes. In the case of Super Mario Bros Wonder, the company is going all out in London to help promote the game AND see if gamers can pay attention. You see, in London, a set of buses has a wrap of the game featuring Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Yoshi. If you’re able to find one of those buses and follow the instructions in the tweet below, you’ll be able to win a prize pack.
Environmental activist group Just Stop Oil has protested EGX 2023 in London today, disrupting Tekken 7 finals by storming the stage during a match. The protestors fire orange paint from a water gun over the gaming equipment, preventing the players from finishing the match.
The soulslike genre is hardly an unexplored frontier these days. While I generally detest using the “like” nomenclature, it’s hard to deny that FromSoftware made some very specific tweaks to the action-RPG genre that keep getting lifted wholesale. I was recently perturbed by Lies Of P essentially just lifting Bloodborne, sprinkling some variations from other Souls games, and then just calling it a day. I have trouble applauding someone for just copying the successes of another company wholesale.
Ask any Buffy fan and they can tell you about their favorite injustice. Without even touching the dicier parts of Joss Whedon as a person, they’ll be quick to tell you about the character he introduced in the opening credits only to kill her off in the same episode (Tara), or who didn’t make it out of the final battle of Sunnydale but really fuckin’ should have (Anya). Even continuing the story in an “eighth season” of comics didn’t seem to provide much comfort for fans hanging around to see what happens and hoping to get justice for their faves. But Audible, with its new series Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, hopes to provide some long-awaited relief for Buffy fans, and maybe even right a couple of wrongs along the way.
Despite its occasional blunders, the Destiny franchise has successfully fostered a community of clever and loyal secret hunters and lore theorists who are always eager to share their thoughts with the rest of their peers. Often, this means veering deep into Destiny‘s most obscure pieces of lore, with expectedly mixed results. One of the latest theories that’s been posted on the r/DestinyLore subreddit, however, has more merit than most, and it may well be on the right track, given everything it’s got going for it.
Final Fantasy has been such a massive franchise that spanned across decades and across multiple console generations. There’s been some truly standout installments from this long-running series as well. One of the more beloved games of the series was Final Fantasy VII, a title that blew up in multiple markets when it initially launched in 1997 for the Sony PlayStation. Since then, fans worldwide have pleaded for Square Enix to return and bring out a remake for this JRPG installment. Fortunately, in 2020, we finally got the first part of this remake. Since this game installment was so massive, the developers could only deliver the game in parts. We’re going to receive Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second installment to this trilogy remake, in 2024.
