A modder adds Paper Mario to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's roster, authentically recreating the character's 2D look and animations. The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate modding community is incredibly active, with modders constantly creating and innovating with new fighters and gameplay overhauls to improve upon the game or expand its roster. While the cast of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate already features a number of recognizable Mario characters, one fan's version of Mario based on his appearances in the Paper Mario series is truly special.
The Paper Mario spin-offs are a series of RPGs that are beloved by many fans. While the series experienced a bit of a slump throughout the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U era, fans remained incredibly enthusiastic about the series. Paper Mario itself would be represented in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a stage and various spirits from the series. However, some fans believed that Paper Mario has the potential to be a very distinct fighter from his mainline counterpart, which is the basis for this Super Smash Bros. Ultimate mod.
This mod was created by MilesFox10 on Twitter, where they showed off clips and screenshots of this mod. As the mod is currently a work-in-progress, some of the videos are early tests of the character in action. Still, even with it being in-development, this Paper Mario mod looks incredible, as Paper Mario is rendered as a 2D sprite that replaces the Animal Crossing Villager fighter. Some of the videos show off the jumping and ducking animations, as well as various victory poses based on the Paper Mario games.
Many fans have complimented Miles' efforts in making Paper Mario feel like a distinct fighter. As a replacement for Villager, Paper Mario shares a moveset with them, including special attacks, standard attacks, and more. This led some fans to volunteer their help with coding a completely new move set for this Super Smash Bros. Ultimate mod, likely taking inspiration from other Paper Mario games like the Nintendo 64 original and The Thousand-Year Door. There is no set release date for this mod, as Miles is working on it in their spare time.
The timing of this Paper Mario mod's development is quite apt, considering Nintendo is remaking the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for the Switch, which retains the 3D and 2D appearance of the GameCube original. Many fans are excited about revisiting The Thousand-Year Door later this May, bringing the classic onto a new platform for the first time. Hopefully, the complete mod will be released in time for The Thousand-Year Door remake's launch.
