Iconic Half-Life character isn’t who we think he is, Valve dev says

Half-Life will never die. Yes, Half-Life 3 has been in the mist for 16 years now. But the FPS game series that brought us Gordon Freeman, Black Mesa, Alyx Vance, and more will never be forgotten – and now there’s cast-iron proof. As part of a huge community event, Half-Life Opposing Force has a dramatic new record for concurrent players on Steam, demonstrating that – in the 19 years since Half-Life 2, and with the wonderful addition of Half-Life Alyx – the fandom remains as strong as ever. I hope Valve is still working on a new Half-Life. The anticipation and love for the series continues to burn bright.

The creator of the satirical Postal series Running With Scissors has permitted its fans to pirate its FPS games and even the remake of the isometric twin-stick shooter original until they have enough money to support them. This news comes during a sale of the entire Postal series on Steam during the weekend.

Since he doesn’t talk, it allows the player to put themselves fully into his HEV-suited shoes, and imagine themselves inside the Half-Life world. Perhaps this is the big character reveal we’ve all been waiting for ahead of Half-Life 3.

Look, we all want a third installment in Valve’s iconic Half-Life series. But the sad truth is, it’s almost certainly never going to happen. As such, we’re stuck with the first two (as well as the VR game Alyx). But that’s a good thing, because Half-Life 1 and 2 are exemplary first-person shooters. So loved is the series, that fans continue to tweak and mod Half-Life and Half-Life 2 to their own ends.

Half-Life will never die. Although it’s been almost 20 years since Half-Life 2, and Half-Life 3 has become essentially mythical, the Valve FPS game remains a stalwart of PC history, with mods and fan projects keeping the legacy of Gordon Freeman alive. Half-Life Alyx proved there’s still so, so much more to explore and enjoy in the world that brought us headcrabs and G-Man, and now, devout Half-Life fans aim to boost, promote, and memorialize the iconic shooter by breaking the Steam world record for concurrent players of HL Opposing Force – and everyone can take part.
