Early footage of Bushiroad Games and Eighting's upcoming Hunter X Hunter: Nen X Impact has shown off its character select screen, suggesting that the game will have a rather small roster of 16 characters. Hunter X Hunter: Nen X Impact was first revealed at the start of 2024, with many fans excited about seeing a licensed 2D fighting game based on the long-running manga. The reveal trailer confirmed that a mix of fan favorite heroes and villains would be playable in the upcoming game, along with the game being a tag team fighter like some of Eighting's past works.
Eighting is a well-known fighting game developer that was responsible for a number of licensed anime fighting games throughout the mid-2000s, working with properties like Bleach, Naruto, and even Full Metal Alchemist, among others. Fans may know Eighting best for its 2D tag-team crossover fighting games, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Hunter X Hunter: Nen X Impact plays very similarly to the Marvel vs. Capcom games and Dragon Ball FighterZ, being a 3v3 tag fighter, but fans are concerned that the game's launch roster is pretty small.
Early footage of Hunter X Hunter: Nen X Impact was released by CAG Osaka during the buildup to EVO Japan 2024, where a number of pro fighting game players got to play an early version of the game. This gameplay demonstration included a brief look at the six characters in Nen X Impact's revealed roster, which included Gon Freecs, Killua Zoldyck, and Kurapika, among others. While the full roster of the game hasn't been revealed yet, part of this early footage did show the character select screen, which contained 16 slots total, which is viewed by some as a rather small number of characters for a fighting game.
The character slots are already occupied by the six already revealed fighters for Nen X Impact, with two also being filled out by Uvogin and Machi Komacine, as they were both revealed during EVO Japan 2024. This leaves only eight more fighters left to be revealed for Nen X Impact's launch roster, with many worried that a smaller roster isn't ideal for a tag fighter and that one of the appeals of the genre and a Hunter X Hunter fighting game is having a huge roster of familiar characters to play as. Many fans have started guessing that with Nen X Impact having a smaller roster, it would only include the major characters, such as Meruem from the Chimera Ant arc, along with the Phantom Troupe faction.
For reference, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3's roster had 50 playable characters at launch, with 25 characters from Marvel and Capcom each. 2017's Marvel vs. CapcomInfinite had a roster of 36 characters, with six being DLC. Dragon Ball FighterZ also had a fairly small roster of 24 characters
