The Penacony in that players can currently explore and play through was almost completely different, according to new information shared by the game’s developers. Penacony is the fourth major destination on the Astral Express’ path, following Herta Space Station, Jarilo-VI, and the Xianzhou Luofu. Also known as the Planet of Festivities, Penacony was released with Version 2.0, and introduced a vibrant location full of lights, colors, and sounds, as if it were one giant amusement park set in a land of dreams. The destination, however, was almost something entirely different.
In an interview with, the development team reveals that while conceiving the world of Penacony, the first major theme they used was clocks. Clockworks are still a big part of Penacony, as seen through the very existence of Clockie as a cartoon character and several of its gameplay mechanics. They were, however, much more important during the initial concept phases – so much so that Victorian era steampunk was the the guiding line for the creation of Penacony in .
The initial idea for Version 2.0’s design of Penacony, according to the devs, was to create “” and that all of that would be coated by an overarching steampunk theme. Throughout this process in development, however, the team stumbled onto a problem that made them change directions quite drastically. According to the developers of:
“However, as we delved deeper, we noted some similarities with Belobog. Meanwhile, driven by narrative needs, we aspired to craft a cosmos twinkling with stars.”
That is where the direction that Penacony was headed toward shifted significantly. The developers reveal that after some deliberation, they decided to incorporate the Jazz Age theme to the Planet of Festivities, which seemingly matched some of the early concept work, since there are still remnants of clockwork scattered across Penacony, a few of its structures, and even the inorganic Intellitrons that roam Penacony.
Looking nothing like Belobog in , it seems like the team’s efforts were not in vain.
In fact, the way that Penacony is currently presented is great both in terms of regular map design but also how that links with the story being told. The Planet of Festivities’ ostentatious lights, colors, and happiness are of great contrast to the actual story being told there, leaning deeper into the idea that all the Land of Joys is but a masquerade for a much more serious and darker narrative.
Unlike other locations, which had areas that matched the theme of the local story, Penacony is the first one to go in the opposite direction, and brilliantly so. The map of Penacony is likely going to continue expanding as future updates are released, perhaps teasing more details hidden from
