Helldivers 2 Fixes Issue That’s Plagued Over a Million Players

Helldivers 2 sales are soaring and outselling Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in the United Kingdom, according to newly published sales data. Post-launch updates and strong community support appear to be key factors for the continued success of Helldivers 2, nearly two months after the game's launch for PlayStation 5 and PC.

Upon its launch in February, Helldivers 2 got off to a better start than almost anyone could have expected, attracting players on both PS5 and PC in droves and selling at a faster pace than even Sony would have anticipated. Two months on from its release, the co-op shooter is continuing to maintain momentum in impressive fashion.

Helldivers 2 no longer cleans up the blood on armor after missions, and players are enjoying this change not mentioned in the patch notes. For the unaware, the recent Helldivers 2 update has shadow-dropped some new content, including a charger meter feature for the LAS-99 Quasar Cannon. As it turned out, this update has quietly added two new enemies that belong to the Automaton faction, Gunships and Factory Striders.

Two months after the launch of Helldivers 2, one of its enemy factions, the Automatons, has been wiped out. Arrowhead Game Studios issued a new Major Order, “Swift Disassembly” two weeks ago to destroy the entire faction, and players have seemingly succeeded. This is despite the Automatons deploying new walker-like Factory Striders and gunships.

One Helldivers 2 player shares a trick to defeat Bile Titans, one of the toughest Terminid enemies, with ease. Since the game's initial launch, Helldivers 2 players have found clever tricks to turn the tides in their favor. For instance, one has found that they can actually put an HMG Emplacement on a Shredder Tank to turn it against other Automaton enemies. Another player also discovered a way to blow up Automaton fabricators using the LAS-99 Quasar Cannon.

After launching in February, Helldivers 2 has become a massive success for both Sony and Arrowhead Game Studios, knocking over many sales milestones and achieving player population numbers despite numerous issues through the first few weeks of the game's release. While the game offers plenty of emergent and dynamic moments through gameplay, part of the appeal is the constant flow of content and activities, which keeps the game feeling fresh.

After suffering a recent, but narrow major order defeat, Helldivers 2 players are asking developer Arrowhead Game Studios to implement a way to see supply lines between planets. Part of the appeal of Helldivers 2, outside of the chaotic nature of missions where unplanned events can take place, is the game's living world. As players take on missions, they directly influence the galactic war by liberating planets, or on occassion, losing them to the enemy factions as well. This push and pull aspect keeps the game feeling fresh and dynamic, as the global map is constantly changing as progress is made or lost.

Helldivers 2 has been nothing short of a revelation, having enjoyed critical and commercial success to degrees that even Sony or developer Arrowhead Game Studios would have dreamt. But even with all of its success, has it become one of PlayStation’s bigger properties?
