If there's one nearly universal complaint about Starfield, it's that the map is close to useless. Luckily, there's now an online resource providing the interactive maps that probably should've been in the game to begin with.

If ever there was a comic book element that was destined to become the signature weapon of a video game, it’s Hellboy’s Right Hand of Doom. I mean just look at it – a massive stone fist made purely for beating the seven bells out of massive monsters. And that’s exactly what you do in Hellboy Web of Wyrd (pronounced ‘wurd’, not ‘weird’), a roguelite brawler that looks like the contents of a Mike Mignola comic emptied onto your screen.
Developer Upstream Arcade has built the crimson cambion in the only logical way; he’s basically a walking tank. Regular enemies stand absolutely no chance against Hellboy, and a single strike from his doom fist wipes them from existence. The real challenge is in the big bads who accompany them. I recently went toe-to-toe with these towering monsters during an hour of hands-on time with Web of Wyrd and found myself pleasantly surprised by how crunchy its punch-ups are.
Where many roguelites are built around fast and twitchy combat, Web of Wyrd is closer in pace to the likes of Monster Hunter and Dark Souls. Enemy attacks have long wind-up animations, each one offering a clear warning of where the blow will land. And you definitely won’t miss those tells; thanks to the sheer size of enemies and that bold Mike Mignola art style, you’ll quickly learn to side-step an overhead cleave and duck an incoming right hook.
But as with all melee fighting games, it's the way the simple fundamentals chain together that makes the combat satisfying. Hellboy’s paranormal detective gear is rounded out with a gun and magical charm – for my demo run I had his classic revolver and a talisman that repelled enemies. And so between weaving through enemy sword strikes and throwing punches of my own, I was able to push approaching assailants out of range and unleash blasts from my hand cannon. I soon learned that the gun is not really a ranged weapon, but a brutal close-up attack that can stagger even the biggest bastard when used at the right time.
A couple of runs of Web of Wyrd’s first stage – a twisting maze of collapsed roads and corridors known as the Faithless Kingdom – was all I needed to nail down those fundamentals. And as I descended into the region’s gloomy second level, the Faithless Sanctum, I was able to grasp the next stage of complexities. I soon learned all about Toughness, a recharging shield-style buffer that protects both Hellboy and his bigger foes from taking permanent health damage. It tempts you into a relentless assault to break through enemy defenses, but you always need to recognise when Hellboy needs to take a time out to recharge his own Toughness. The half-demon can take the pain, but he’s not invincible. Thankfully, he’s got his own special Payback ability, which –

Hell-shaded.
For a quirky MMO that nobody had heard of until The Game Awards 2022, Wayfinder has done something exceptional. The title from Austin developers Airship Syndicate and publisher Digital Extremes slipped into Early Access on 15 August. After a brief hiatus between beta tests and something of a social media storm, the colorful adventure set out to blow us all away. It then proceeded to break in spectacular fashion.
If the last Hellboy film left you cold on the franchise, the new game – Hellboy: Web of Wyrd – might just have you rekindling what you love about the character and world all over again.
For my money, no single-player game makes you earn every acrobatic kill quite like 2020’s Ghostrunner. Its fast-paced action platforming was intense and brutally challenging, but wall-running, air dodging, and sliding your way around a room to chop up enemies while dodging their pinpoint counter-offensives felt satisfying when you got it right. Based on my very limited hands-on time with the sequel, its brand of high-speed kill-or-be-killed violence remains one of the most unique and rewarding action game experiences out there, and Ghostrunner 2 wastes no time upping the ante with new tricks to get the edge on enemies, and new ways to challenge your reflexes.
In 2014, three years after FromSoftware caused an industrial quake with Dark Souls, Lords of the Fallen was released. Created by Deck13 and CI Games, it was a middling attempt at recreating the punishing magic of FromSoft’s masterpiece. In the years since it has fallen into obscurity; a largely forgotten B-tier relic from the dawn of the eighth console generation. But while Lords of the Fallen isn’t notable for its quality, it will always be an important part of gaming history. It was the first significant ‘soulslike’. An entire genre of FromSoftware copycats began here.
Sonic Superstars isn’t the first time that Sega has attempted to recapture the magic of playing the original Sonic the Hedgehog more than 30 years ago. Just five years ago, in fact, Sonic Mania stuck that landing. So is there enough creative juice left in that IP tank to truly warrant another stab at rebooting the classic sidescroller? After blazing through four levels with Sonic and his cabal of colorful friends, each with their particular set of skills, signs point to yes — with a caveat. Ultimately, Sonic Superstars is just more Sonic with a facelift and a few new bells and whistles. The game is fun and tricky, great to look at, and speaks to those Sega Genesis memories lodged forever in my brain, but it also doesn’t feel amazingly novel. At least in solo play, that is.

It has been 16 years since STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl. That means it’s also been 16 years since I last played a STALKER game. I admired the original but never loved its wonky, ambitious heart enough to explore its two follow-ups. But despite that decade-plus time away from the series, when I sat down to play STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl at gamescom 2023 it felt like I’d never been away. As if reactivating a long-dormant muscle, I found its creeping pace and scrappy gunfights instantly familiar. That’s good news for devout fans of the cult PC series, but perhaps more of a challenge for the potential legion of newcomers that will arrive at launch via Game Pass.
In most survival games you’re lucky if you have a shelter fashioned from a few sticks and leaves. Maybe a little fire you can use to cook nasty-tasting berries that do just enough to keep hunger at bay. And while Nightingale starts off in a similar way, with little more than a handful of sticks and stones to keep you alive, it’s not long until you’re able to build something altogether more impressive.
