During a pre-Gamescom 2023 press briefing, NVIDIA announced that Half-Life 2 RTX is now in development. The project is being handled by four of the top Half-Life 2 modding teams, who have been approached by NVIDIA and have decided to come together as Orbifold Studios to remaster the game with the RTX Remix creator toolkit that they received in early access.
Just like Portal Prelude: RTX, this will support ray tracing, DLSS 3, and RTX IO. We have already seen a work-in-progress Half-Life 2 path tracing mod made with RTX Remix, but this is on another level, as you can see in the image gallery below.
The remaster's project has just started, though, and the team is awaiting reinforcements. If interested, head to nvidia.com/HalfLife2RTX to join the effort.
During the Q&A portion of the press briefing, I asked if there were any updates on the public availability of the RTX Remix creator toolkit. RTX Remix Product Manager Nyle Usmani replied that NVIDIA will continue to provide early access to more and more creators, just like they are doing with this project, but there's no ETA on a public launch yet.
Half-Life 2 RTX is just one of the many announcements shared by NVIDIA at Gamescom 2023, such as DLSS 3.5, newly announced RTX/DLSS games, newly announced GeForce NOW games, and improvements to the Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE) powered by NeMo SteerLM.
We have some new rumors about the Nintendo Switch 2 that raise expectations even higher.
Very little is currently known about the Nintendo Switch 2 console, but if the rumors circulating can be believed, it will be quite a step forward from its predecessor, as it will reportedly come with ray tracing capabilities.
Starfield is now available for those with early access and modders quickly worked to add several missing features including support for Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) tech and an FOV Slider.
Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora is due to launch December 7th, and Ubisoft have now detailed the graphics features that will set the PC version apart. The list includes raytraced reflections and shadows, "extended graphics settings" and an in-built benchmarking tool.
Video game and general graphical technology is advancing so fast, that it’s tough to keep up with it. Now, Nvidia has announced that the latest version of its Deep Learning Super Sampling (or DLSS) is on the way, and it’s already going to support some modern titles.
It’s so easy to modify Half-Life 2 that it’s no wonder Valve’s 2004 magnum opus is still part of the gaming scene. However, if you just want the game to look prettier, you can soon run it through Nvidia’s RTX Remix tech.
Nvidia will introduce DLSS 3.5 this autumn, the latest version of its industry-dominating super-sampling tech, enabling AI-enhanced path-tracing for all RTX graphics card owners.
Half-Life 2 RTX is on the way, and it’s already evoking the same feelings of awe I had simply looking at the now-classic Valve FPS game almost 20 years ago. Featuring ray tracing, modernized assets, and more, this is the closest we’ll likely ever get to a full Half-Life 2 remake.
Nvidia DLSS is already an invaluable way to improve performance and image quality, particularly when ray tracing is involved. Now, with the advent of ‘Ray Reconstruction’ as part of DLSS 3.5, Nvidia is working to improve ray tracing fidelity and frame rates across its entire GeForce RTX graphics card range.
At Gamescom today Nvidia announced Half-Life 2 RTX: An RTX Remix Project, a visually remastered version of Valve's 2004 FPS in development by the newly formed Orbifold Studios, a collective of designers and modders with serious Half-Life chops. The teaser trailer shows the new version of Kleiner's Lab, sliding between the original look and the remaster, and featuring high-resolution remakes of assets.
Nvidia is helping community modders remaster Half-Life 2 with modern graphics — and so far, the results look stunning.
Half-Life 2 RTX is setting out to be an incredible remake, as the lighting improvements brought by RTX Remix are only the tip of the iceberg.
