Hackers reportedly leak screens and details of Insomniac's Wolverine game - Sony "investigating"

Steam has released its annual end-of-year charts, ranking the games that have generated the most cold-hard cash on the digital PC storefront. Frequent chart-toppers this year include the obvious subjects (Baldur’s Gate 3, Starfield), as well as the games that silently crushed it (Sons of the Forest, Goose Goose Duck.)

Material from last year's Rockstar hack has seemingly been shared online, claiming that the company cancelled multiple games and DLC expansions. Most concerningly, however, it's being claimed that the leak includes information on Rockstar employees, including contact details.

Rockstar Games has seemingly been hit with yet another leak. Several reports have tipped that the complete source code of Grand Theft Auto 5 has been leaked. Reports have also suggested the leak includes GTA 6 codes and files from a rumoured sequel to the company's 2006 game, Bully. Notably, the hacker who helped leak GTA 6 gameplays last year was sentenced to indefinite hospital prison last week. Even the GTA 6 trailer was revealed 15 hours ahead of schedule in response to a leak that had shared the trailer online.

Insomniac Games has finally responded to the massive hack that took place earlier this week and confirmed that its plans for Wolverine will not be changing, despite so much of it being leaked and shown off.

It hasn’t been a good couple of years for video game developers and publishers regarding leaks. No matter what they try to do to protect themselves from hackers and such, the various cyber experts of the world continue to find a way to get into systems and spill all sorts of information. You all know about the hack that happened to Insomniac Games and how that affected them, and in 2022, it was Rockstar Games who was affected when a teenager hacked into their systems and revealed GTA 6 to the world via files and video footage. Needless to say, Rockstar wasn’t happy about that.

Wolverine PS5 gameplay footage and internal data of countless Insomniac Games employees have leaked online. The ransomware group Rhysida has followed through on its threat to release 1.67TB of confidential data, after publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) refused to meet their demands of paying 50BTC or $2 million within a week. The group also claims to have leaked 98 percent of the data, while the remaining two percent was sold to undisclosed sellers — it's unclear what those files contain. Videos have begun circulating online, featuring raw gameplay accompanied by animated storyboards, concept art, locations, the general plot, and a targeted release window of 2026.

Akatsuki has entered into capital and business alliance agreements with Sony Group Corporation and Koei Tecmo Holdings, and conducted a disposition of its treasure stock through third-party allotment, the company announced.

There will be a lengthy gap of X-Men games on Sony’s rival platforms. I’m sure you’re all familiar with the recent ransomware attack. Well, it looks like Sony didn’t pay up, and the group has since moved on to deliver a series of leaked documents from Insomniac Games. The developer behind Marvel’s Spider-Man and upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine has been finding their upcoming projects’ roadmaps, leaked plot details, and more. Among the recent set of leaked documents, a signed deal between Marvel and Sony shows that X-Men has become an exclusive IP for Sony. 

Seven days ago, on December 12, ransomware group Rhysida hacked into popular game developer Insomniac's online database and demanded a payment of 50 BTC (bitcoin) from the company, which amounts to roughly 2 million dollars. The hackers said unless they were paid within 7 days, the 1.67 terabytes of internal data, which include 1.3 million files about the company's upcoming projects, personal staff information, and more, would be released online. Now, seven days later, today, December 19, Rhysida group has leaked 98 percent of the data on its darknet leak site, after Insomniac refused to pay the criminals. The leaked data has revealed information about Marvel's Spider-Man 3 and Wolverine games, which are currently being developed by the game company.

The data includes footage and files from Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine game, as well as the studio’s release slate for the next 12 years, sensitive commercial and strategy documents, Slack screenshots, and personnel files.

Insomniac Games was recently hacked by a ransomware group known as Rhysida, which claimed to have access to large amounts of internal, confidential data, including personal information of several employees. Following Insomniac’s refusal to pay for the return of the data, the hacker group has now released the vast majority of it online, as reported by Cyber Daily. In a statement provided to the outlet, the hacker group has said it viewed Insomniac as “an easy target”.
