Greco-Roman-Inspired Sci-Fi Metroidvania 'Somber Echoes' Revealed

Last month, developers Jyamma announced Enotria: The Last Song, an Italian-inspired Soulslike where masks give you powers. It was originally due out on June 21st, but then FromSoftware announced that Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree would also launch on the same day. Not ideal. So, Jyamma delayed Enotria's release, and in an announcement at last night's Future Games Show, we now know it's launching in August. It has, however, dropped itself into another conundrum: Black Myth: Wukong, another hotly anticipated Soulslike, arrives a day earlier.

It was initially rather surprising when Moon Studios, well known for developing the beloved Metroidvania games Ori and the Blind Forest and its sequel, announced that its next game isn't a Metroidvania at all. No Rest for the Wicked is an action-RPG not unlike Diablo, but the devs have reassured that it's "much more Metroidvania" than most games in the genre.

Sky of Tides is a sci-fi RPG that follows Rin, a young woman born into a technologically advanced race on the brink of war.

Tales Of Kenzera: Zau is an upcoming Metroidvania game that integrates the aesthetics of Afrofuturism and the culture surrounding Bantu mythology. The game aims to utilize the challenges posed by the Metroidvania format to explore themes of grief. Published by EA, Tales of Kenzera: Zau is expected to release on April 23 on PS5, Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. In December 2023 at The Game Awards, Abubakar Salim, who gamers may recognize for voicing Bayek in Assassin's Creed: Origins, unveiled that this game is being made by his company, Surgent Studios.

Today, NVIDIA shared various announcements ahead of next week's Game Developers Conference.
