After 10 long years of waiting, Rockstar Games will finally reveal the trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 in December.
The announcement was made by the games’ creators on X/Twitter, with the release of the trailer coinciding with Rockstar Games’ 25th anniversary.
“We are very excited to let you know that in early December, we will release the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto. We look forward to many more years of sharing these experiences with all of you,” the company posted on X/Twitter.
Within five hours of the post being shared, it became the most-liked Tweet related to gaming. As of writing, the post has 1.3 million likes, and 123.2 million views.
In earlier posts, Rockstar Games’ co-founder and president Sam Houser reflected on the company’s journey and thanked fans for support.
“Without you, none of this would be possible, and we are so grateful to all of you for sharing this journey with us,” Houser wrote.
“In 1998, Rockstar Games was founded on the idea that video games could come to be as essential to culture as any other form of entertainment, and we hope that we have created games you love in our efforts to be part of that evolution.”
The game’s prequel, Grand Theft Auto 5, broke several Guinness World Records when it was realsed in 2013, including highest grossing video game in 24 hours, fastest entertainment property to gross US$1b, and highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours.
It remains the second best-selling video game of all time behind Minecraft, with 185 million copies sold.
Rockstar Games’ biggest release since GTA 5 was 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2, a sequel to the 2010 original. In its opening week, RDR2 generated a record-breaking $725m in world-wide sales, according to Variety.
Before the wait for GTA 6, the longest time between Grand Theft Auto games took five years. The long wait for the next instalment has been chalked up to Rockstar Games’ effort in quality: Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactives told TweakTown the game developers are seeking “nothing short of perfection.”
When GTA5 arrived, the game was considered ahead of its time, and leaves big shoes for Rockstar Games to fill and improve on.
The companies also make regular updates to Grand Theft Auto Online, which in turns funds the production of GTA6.
Rockstar Games has also seen a number of senior members leaving, including writer Michael Unsworth, who worked on GTA5 and RDR2. Former vice president and co-founder Dan Houser left the company in 2020, while GTA lead developer Leslie Benzies left in 2016.
According to Bloomberg, Rockstar Games has also undergone a recent shift in work culture from its infamous “frat-boy culture”, and completely
