Gearbox Hero Shooter Gigantic Coming Back Online For One Weekend Only

Big, bad Babet has been battering the British Isles this week with wind and rain, which has made the decision to stay indoors and play games or watch sports, movies or Deep Space 9 clips on YouTube this weekend quite easy. That, and there’s a bunch of fantastic games that have come out this week, including Spider-Man 2, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 and plenty more.

Fortnite is always ever-changing. It seems you can't go a day without something happening in the battle royale, be that a new battle pass, the addition of different character skins or even the return of the old fan-favourite Fortnite map.

It’s been a busy week in the gaming industry, with big game releases, a new PS5 and, after months of to-ing and fro-ing, Microsoft finally completed their acquisition of Activision Blizzard to the tune of $68.7 billion!

Activision Blizzard boss Robert Kotick indicated in during a recent townhall discussion that the company might be looking to bring back the Guitar Hero franchise, according to Windows Central. According to Kotick, this is largely thanks to the amount of resources that would be afforded to the company thanks to its acquisition by Microsoft.

While Nintendo has never given up on the 2D Mario games, there’s long been a sense they’re not the plucky plumber’s top-of-the-line products. The New Super Mario Bros. games are good, polished fun, but they’re a little simple, a little bland, compared to inventive 3D classics like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Odyssey. That said, could the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Wonder mark an end to this trend?

Five years after it was put in the grave, the free-to-play hero shooter Gigantic is back for one weekend only, and while the game's fans are thrilled to have even a brief opportunity to play it once again I can't help but wonder if this is a new circle of game preservation hell.

Blizzard is confident that all of the quality of life changes coming in Diablo 4 Season 2 will bring back lapsed players.

Gigantic, a team-based shooter initially released in 2017, has returned for a limited time. From October 5 to October 7 the third-person shooter is hosting a “throwback event” where certain players will be able to play through the game again. Unfortunately, the event appears to be invite-only, so won’t be publicly accessible, but could lead to something more for the game depending on its popularity. 

Remember Gigantic? Gearbox Publishing certainly does. And it looks like the company is hoping fans of the doomed hero shooter do as well. The company sent emails to some former Gigantic players, inviting them to come together once more for a “limited time throwback event.”

Gigantic is—or was—a free-to-play «strategic hero shooter» that went into full release in July 2017 and almost immediately fell into misfortune. In November 2017, developer Motiga was closed, and just a couple months later publisher Perfect World announced that the game would suffer the same fate in July 2018. But now, improbably and unexpectedly, it looks like it might be making a comeback: Gearbox has confirmed that invitations to a «limited time throwback event» are legit.

Mortal Kombat 1’s release has made for an interesting time in the franchise’s longstanding history. With this new game, we’ve seen the return of many iconic characters from its more experimental era. With the Kameo system included, MK1 truly feels like a love letter to fans of the classic Mortal Kombat 3D era.
