While it may not have achieved the same cult status enjoyed by 2003’s The Simpsons: Hit & Run – which is now widely regarded as the best Simpsons game from the PS2 era, if not of all time – fans of the franchise enjoyed The Simpsons Game for its self-aware humor and satirical script. Featuring an original story by regular Simpsons writers, The Simpsons Game played more like an extended episode of the TV show, with the dysfunctional family using their new-found superpowers to battle through a host of parodied video game worlds and genres to save Springfield from extinction at the hands of the mysterious «Creator.»
The early 2000s was the golden era of Simpsons video games. However, aside from several Simpsons mobile games and arcade cabinets, 2007’s The Simpsons Game was the franchise’s last game to be released. Made for the Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and the PlayStation Portable, Redditor u/OnceIwas3078yearsold has found that The Simpsons Game featured unique box art for each platform. Most depict Homer assailed by various antagonists while the residents of Springfield look on, their various costumes giving hints of the satirized franchises and conventions within the game. The PlayStation 3 version features Patty and Selma as the double-headed hydra from the game’s Legend of Zelda-inspired level, and the PSP cover shows the dysfunctional dad in full WWII regalia from the game’s “Medal of Homer” section.
While collectors have long known about and sought after the various editions, the revelation is news to many fans who only owned the game on one platform. The box art was not the only variation from console to console, as the Nintendo DS version featured strikingly different 2D graphics and gameplay that made it almost reminiscent of the old Simpsons Konami arcade games.
The Simpsons Game is not currently available for purchase on any platform’s online marketplace.
