VGC is giving away 1,000 PC beta keys for squad-based first-person shooter Ascendant, and you can grab yours on a first come, first served basis via this link.
The beta will launch on Friday, April 5 running for two days until Saturday, April 6.
Developed by Cambridge-based PlayFusion, Ascendant is billed by its creator as the “first ‘Adaption shooter”.
“Players will experience a battlefield that shifts on a dime, challenging you to adapt, outmaneuver, and outgun your rivals,” it says. “With a dynamic map, unpredictable in-game events, multiple strategies and weapon dynamics, it means that teamwork will be crucial”.
The closed beta will feature team-based battles set within a 3v3v3v3 PvP map that dynamically changes, as described above.
PlayFusion says this dynamic aspect means that players will experience a lot of variety in matches.
“Each match is different, with game-changing events and adrenaline-fueled battles. Set in a dynamic biopunk world where everything wants to kill you, fight to secure the precious biocores for your team, and get out with more than just your dignity.”
A new video – embedded above – highlights some of the elements players can experience during the beta, including a look at the Virtual Game Director and how your player decisions shape each match.

And yet, for more than half a decade, no whisper of a PC release was heard - until now, that is.

Players who've been eager to play but haven't felt like parting with their cash just yet are in luck because the game will soon be free to play. Launching in late 2023, the remastered version of the popular may not have established itself as a powerhouse in the genre like its older iteration, but the game still boasts a dedicated community. While the price for entry is still fairly steep, those who want to understand why the game is so beloved and hated in equal measure can now do so without spending a cent.
Game Rant is giving away 500 closed beta keys for Ascendant, a new squad-based tactical FPS that describes itself as the world's first «adaption» shooter. Ascendant has turned heads since its initial reveal, and developer PlayFusion is going all-out to deliver an over-the-top experience that should provide something genuinely unique in the crowded FPS landscape.
