If you ever wished that Into the Breach was less giant robots and more Fire Emblem, I’ve got a treat for you. Tyrant’s Blessing provides exactly that, and it’s out right now on Android.
Tyrant’s Blessing is a turn-based strategy game that plays out on a grid. It looks exactly like Into the Breach, but you fight with Fire Emblem-like characters, with swords, bows, and magic.
It takes place in the world of Tyberia, where a Tyrant is wreaking havoc. He has promised the Tyberians everlasting peace: no war, suffering, or death. The price? They all must die at the hands of his undead army.
As you can probably guess, these dead Tyberians simply ended up joining the army’s ranks. You play as one of a few members of the living, and have to lead an uprising against the Tyrant and his army.
You have to recruit soldiers over the course of your adventure, which all have a class, ranging from warriors to assassins and archers.
Then, you have to choose who you bring into the myriad battles. This is a big part of the strategy, as you have to pay attention to the layout of each level, and bring units that can take advantage of it.
According to the developer, unit selection and placement is far more important than min-maxing. That likely makes this less of an RPG and more of a strategy game.
Within battles, you can use the environment to your advantage. You can hide in bushes, kick up dust, or take cover behind stones.
You can also push enemies into obstacles, block the enemy with a shield, or create devastating elemental attacks using the environment.
Actually, no. The game takes place over a series of days, and each one you have to make a key decision about how to proceed in your campaign.
You face a variety of random encounters, and have to choose how to proceed. Do you risk your soldiers? Or do you look the other way and move on?
Much like in Fire Emblem, you have to face permadeath. Units that fall in battle will never return, which makes these decisions all the more important.
Lastly, Tyrant’s Blessing rewards replayability. Each run through, you will encounter different heroes.
Each of them has their own playstyle and personality, so it’s worth playing through multiple times to meet them all.
