If you've been playing through Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, or have even finished it, you'll know that things can get pretty wild when it comes to alternate timelines, universes, and all sorts of strange, meta mumbo jumbo. It can be difficult to keep track of everything that's happening and being said, especially when Cloud himself is immensely unreliable as a main character and his headaches are a primary source of confusion.
While Cloud's headaches don't affect our understanding of the plot too much when they rear their head, at least in the initial stages. There is one moment in the game's finale in which they completely cut out all sounds while Cloud is talking, leaving us completely clueless as to what he's saying. Thankfully, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Ultimania has cleared it up, but be warned, we're heading deep into spoiler territory.
If you're still with me, you've probably finished Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and you'll know the scene we're referring to has Aerith dying in Cloud's arms after having failed to stop Sephiroth from skewering her. Obviously, it's not that simple, as nothing ever is in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and Cloud has a couple of headaches, and we see him speaking with no sound. We don't know what words are being spoken, but a dev interview in Ultimanium has cleared it up.
Translated by Twitter user Aitaikimochi, game writer Kazushige Nomura reveals that Cloud is saying his lines from the original game, those being "My mouth is dry. My eyes are burning!" Co-director Motomu Toriyama explains that they can't go into any more details other than that, as they want to leave the ending up to interpretation for now, but does say that Nomura told Square Enix to make sure Cloud's lines from the OG were included as "a flashback" during the scene.
This won't be huge news for those of you that love the original, but if you're just experiencing Final Fantasy 7, then this is your answer. It also confirms some fan theories that think Cloud is seeing two versions of events, the one he's in and the experiences of another world, which Ultimania confirms there are six others. Yes, it's more multiverse shenanigans, but at least one of the mysteries surrounding the ending has been cleared up.
