Yellow Bricks Games has just revealed the first trailer for the upcoming Eternal Strands, and the game has strong Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom vibes. Created by former BioWare and Ubisoft employees, the game is an action adventure with influences from the latest Zelda, Monster Hunter, and Shadow of the Colossus.
Founded by former Dragon Age creative director Mike Laidlaw, the Yellow Bricks Games studio was formed in 2020. The studio reunited several veterans from prominent AAA companies, and it has finally unveiled a first glimpse of what the team has been working on so far.
Eternal Strands will be a third-person action-adventure made using Unreal Engine 5. In it, players will take on the role of Brynn, “a fearless Weaver determined to recover her people’s cultural home.” In the reveal trailer, it’s easy to see the main influences of Eternal Strands. Not only is the game’s combat greatly inspired by the Monster Hunter series, with huge enemies that Brynn can climb on, but it also has physics-manipulating magical powers not unlike those seen in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
According to Yellow Bricks Games, Brynn will have an arsenal of spells and magical weapons that can help in combat. The game is set to incentivize the use of the environment during fights, such as covering behind ice during a fight against a fire-breathing dragon, for example. Another aspect highlighted on Eternal Strands’ official site was exploration, as gamers may use their abilities to create new paths and climb on every surface to discover secrets. At the moment, Eternal Strands does not have an official release date.
It’s not surprising to see Eternal Strands taking a lesson from the latest Zelda. Tears of the Kingdom was a huge hit, selling over 18 million copies so far, and was greatly praised for how adaptable and creative its gameplay was. By mixing Zelda’s design philosophy with Monster Hunter-like combat, the upcoming action-adventure may likely attract a large audience with its emergent gameplay.
While Eternal Strands looks like a great mixture of quick-paced action with physics-based gameplay, old-school BioWare fans may notice that the word “RPG” is not used to describe the game. Laidlaw was mostly known for his work in the Dragon Age series, one of the most popular RPG series ever made, so it remains to be seen how the influence of this genre will be in the final version of Eternal Strands.
