An upcoming game with strong Stardew Valley vibes called SunnySide has recently released a demo on Steam and unveiled its official release date. SunnySide is an upcoming 3D life sim game set in the Japanese countryside and may appease Stardew Valley fans looking for a new experience.
Ever since the release of Stardew Valley in 2016, the life sim genre has become very popular. The success of the indie title sparked a huge wave of new games like Stardew Valley, and SunnySide is the latest one to follow this trend.
Now, developer RainyGames and publisher Merge Games have announced the release date for SunnySide. The game will be available for PC on May 24, and console gamers will be able to play it on July 10. PC players can currently play the SunnySide demo on Steam, which will offer them a limited glimpse of the life sim game.
Set in a rural Japanese city, SunnySide has all the expected elements of cozy Stardew Valley-like games. In it, players can create their character, build their homestead, cultivate crops, take care of animals, build new relationships with local inhabitants, and explore the region to gather resources. It’s already confirmed that gamers will be able to romance some of the 27 NPCs available and participate in their daily lives, hanging out with them in the town or helping them in their businesses. According to the game’s creators, players will be able to use modern technology to help them while exploring the local community, employing a highly customizable smartphone. Also, they can grow 113 different crops, and cook hundreds of food recipes.
This is not the first life simulation game to feature the Japanese countryside as its setting. Last year, Japanese Rural Life offered a Stardew Valley-like experience for gamers who wanted to explore the rural side of the Asian country. As usual, the game allowed players to take care of their farm, and interact with local villagers.
Some other life sim games are following a more original approach, though. Mirthwood was announced last year, for example, mixing medieval fantasy with Stardew Valley vibes. In the upcoming game, players will still harvest crops and raise animals, but will play as refugees in a fantasy land. With an increased focus on exploration and combat, the game blurs the lines between a traditional RPG and a life sim, and it is one of the most interesting tweaks to the formula recently.
