Whether that is from basic to to third, fourth, or fifth edition, the game has never stayed the same for long. The last full edition of, 5e, was released in 2014 after being playtested under the name D&D Next.
Now, a decade later in 2024, 5e is being updated just in time for the RPG's 50th anniversary. Playtesting has been going on under the codename One D&D since 2022. The first book of the 2024 update is going to be the (or ), and it will be followed quickly by a new and .
It appears that the 2024 may be released on May 21, 2024. Tentative dates for all of 2024's books were mistakenly posted on social media during PAX Unplugged in late 2023. These posts were subsequently pulled, so the actual date for the 2024 is still officially unknown, and may be subject to change. What is known, however, is that the is the first of the core rulebooks slated to come out.
Wizards of the Coast's online store currently sells the 2014 digital/physical bundle for $59.95, and the 2024 update will likely be around the same price. There will most certainly be a D&D Beyond version of the rulebook, probably priced near $29.95 to maintain consistency. It is also likely that other virtual tabletop platforms like Roll20 will have the new 2024 adapted and for sale around the same price the current one sells for.

There will be character classes, spells, abilities, items, combat rules, races (which are going to be called species in the 2024 edition, according to One D&Dplaytest packets), and more. The point in releasing a new, however, are the changes included. Some of the most radical appear to be alterations to familiar classes, such as druids and rangers. No class will be untouched, though, with spells being broken into Arcane, Divine, and Primal categories instead of simple class-based lists, as well as martial characters gaining a new system called Weapon Mastery. There are also tweaks to how abilities like the barbarian class' Rage work.
There are no new classes being introduced in the 2024 . As of PAX Unplugged in late 2023, the artificer class will not be included in the update. Each class that is included will have four subclasses to choose from.
Races will be called species in the 2024 update, removing some bioessentialism from the game. New mechanics for player character abilities coming from backgrounds and origins are being introduced,
