Epic Games Store gave away a total of $2,055 in free games last year. Launched in 2018 as a competitor to Steam, the Epic Games Store has become a major player in the games sales business. Millions of people have become users of the platform, which has released exclusive games like Alan Wake 2, and Assassin's Creed Mirage. But as well as securing the latest releases, the Epic Games Store continues to give players several free games.
While the selection of free games that have passed through the Epic Games Store includes many indies, famous names have had their turn. With this, players have been able to claim Wolfenstein: The New Order, Prey, Shenmue 3, Sonic Mania, and even Grand Theft Auto 5, with GTA 5 taking down the Epic Games Store temporarily. Now, Epic Games has revealed significant information about the free games given away last year.
Epic Games gave away $2,055 in free games last year through the Epic Games Store. The information is part of the Epic Games Store Year in Review, which provides information about how the digital store performed last year. As well as showing the total value, the chart reveals that players claimed the 86 free games almost 586 million times. Some of last year's highlights include Death Stranding given away in May, The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2 in October, and The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition given away in December.
The Epic Games Store Year in Review reveals that the digital store has experienced significant growth, reaching over 270 million PC users. When it comes to purchasing, the total spent by PC gamers on the Epic Games Store was $950 million, an increase of 16%. They also spent $310 million on third-party PC games, a drop of 13%. In revealing the top games of 2023 in terms of player spending and engagement, Genshin Impact showed its popularity by appearing in the top tier with Rocket League, Dead Island 2, Grand Theft Auto Online, and Fortnite. Destiny 2, which has had quite a troubled year, appeared in the epic tier, the lowest tier in the chart.
Epic Games' free games program is in its sixth year and shows no signs of stopping. In 2024, players have already claimed big names, like A Plague Tale: Innocence and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. This week's free game is Dakar Desert Rally, to be replaced next week by Super Meat Boy Forever.

From March 14 to March 21, Epic Games Store users will have the chance to claim Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and The Bridge for their digital libraries. Epic Games Store users are treated to new free games on a weekly basis, though the quantity of free games tends to differ. Sometimes, Epic Games Store users get two free games per week, like what's happening next Thursday, but other times, EGS users are only treated to one free game.
