Dragon's Dogma 2 fans have been sharing some of the things that they think the first game did better than the sequel, such as all items being able to stack to 999 and Pawns more closely following your commands.
We're only a few months into 2024, but we've already had some big hits, from Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Tekken 8 to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. One of the most interesting, and divisive, games of the year so far is Dragon's Dogma 2, which has widely been praised for its combat, Pawns, and emergent gameplay, among many other things.
That being said, as great as certain aspects of Dragon's Dogma 2 are, there's also a lot about it that fans have been a little more critical of. We've already talked at length about the microtransactions situation, but others have pointed out that the story is a letdown and that certain gameplay elements, such as enemy variety, feel like a downgrade from the first game.
In fact, as well-received as Dragon's Dogma 2 has been so far, it seems that there are quite a lot of things that fans think the first game did better. Over on the Dragon's Dogma 2 subreddit, Redditor IsmenioM9 asked the community if there's anything they think has been downgraded in the sequel, which garnered nearly 800 comments as of the time of writing.
One of the top comments on the thread is a relatively simple note from Redditor EntrepreneurLess751, who said that they liked the first game's quest boards, something that's completely missing from the sequel. Some other smaller issues that fans have include not being able to buy and put items straight into storage, and also not being able to equip items straight from storage when changing Vocations.
I'm a relative newcomer to Dragon's Dogma 2 so I didn't realise this was a thing in the first game but god is it a pain to swap everything over every time you swap Vocation.
Another popular comment comes from Redditor Own-Difficulty5944, who pointed out a number of things that the first game did better, such as Pawns more closely following commands, items being able to be stacked up to 999, and that making money was a lot easier (thanks in part to the quest boards).
On the gameplay side of things, fans have expressed that they miss the Mystic Knight Vocation and think that the Mage and Sorcerer basic attacks are too useless compared to how they were in the first game. Some fans have also pointed out that armour is way less versatile in the sequel, which is actually something that has been talked about since the game launched.
