Cyberpunk 2077 is Only Getting One Expansion Due to CDPR’s Unreal Engine Switch

After the recent slate of indie developers speaking out against Unity’s recently-announced plans to revise how it makes money off games developed using the engine, the company has taken to social media platform X to release a new statement.

's long-awaited DLC, is finally nearing its release. The expansion will launch exclusively on current-gen devices such as Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5, as well as PC, unlike the original which attempted to launch on last-gen consoles with disastrous results. It will also be coupled with a massive 2.0 update, making CD Projekt Red's first and last DLC for its 2020 ARPG a huge overhaul for the title, bringing it more in line with the experience many expected from at launch.

Before that, Update 2.0 goes live, adding several new gameplay features like redesigned perks. During Night City Wire, the developer released three new trailers showcasing the different builds players can run with.

When it launched nearly three years ago, Cyberpunk 2077 fell woefully short of expectations, but CD Projekt RED is looking to bring the action RPG up to scratch with a significant new update. Alongside the launch of Phantom Liberty, the game is also getting the free Update 2.0, which will overhaul several gameplay systems and mechanics in the base game, and as promised last week, its release date has now been announced.

As Cyberpunk 2077's Phantom Liberty expansion inches closer, developer CD Projekt Red has warned PC players to test their cooling systems beforehand. In a tweet, lead scene programmer Filip Pierściński claimed that both the game's paid expansion and the version 2.0 update will be heavy on CPU usage, essentially squeezing every bit of performance out of the chip. As such, a 90 percent workload on an 8-core processor is easily expected, which could lead to thermal throttling. It's unclear as to what aspect of the update is making the game so CPU-demanding, but past patches heavily focused on ray-tracing features.

It’s a busy month for CD Projekt RED and Cyberpunk 2077, with the latter receiving its massive 2.0 update and then the paid expansion, Phantom Liberty. The latter introduces a new district, Dogtown, and while we’ve seen some of the seedier locations, including the Black Market, there are also locations housing the elite.

The sci-fi RPG is proving to be a big hit for Bethesda Game Studios. However, not everyone is impressed by all aspects of the game. One Twitter user posted a video negatively comparing it to CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, prompting a Cyberpunk developer to defend Starfield.

If you’re after Cyberpunk 2077’s upcoming expansion pass, Phantom Liberty, you better be sure you have enough storage space. Today, a new leak has surfaced online highlighting what players will look at for a download size. According to the latest reports, players will find the game expansion at about 32 GB of storage space. That’s not too bad, but you will also need to factor in the download size of the actual Cyberpunk 2077 base game.

When Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty launches later this month, it will be bringing a whole host of new content, from a new campaign to another district being added to the open world to the new Relic tree system.
