If you're fond of the fairly specific blend of doomy theology, rich art direction and Soulslike-tinted metroidvaning encapsulated by Blasphemous, you might also enjoy Saviorless from Cuban team Empty Head Games and publisher Dear Villagers, which now has a PC release date of 2nd April.
Saviorless grabs me for a couple of reasons. Firstly there's the development team's choice of inspirations: platformers such as Earthworm Jim and Demon's Crest on the one hand, and on the other, comic books, stained glass windows and 19th-century symbolist art. I am keen on all these things. Secondly, there's Empty Head's older characterisation of it as "a product of this unique moment in Cuban history", to quote the 2016 Indiegogo funding page - "a reflection of our personal experiences in Cuba, from the crumbling scenery to the unpredictable story to the stylized and hand drawn artwork."
In Saviorless you play Antar, "a recklessly curious child" who has travelled to an archipelago full of abominable creatures on a quest to become a Savior, whatever that means in practice. Antar seems pretty vulnerable, a gangly figure in a robe depicted running away from various grinning, long-limbed monsters. So it's just as well that you can switch between Antar and two other characters with different abilities, a powerful masked avatar and a bestial hunter called Nento, "who will do whatever it takes to become the unexpected protagonist of this story".
Saviorless's setting, the Smiling Islands, is a place of ruins, waterfalls, catacombs and deathly machinery that puts me in mind of Sundered. Here's how the developers themselves describe the look and feel of the world: "the characters and creatures are rendered in an exaggerated, almost grotesque manner with realistic anatomical structures - yet sit within a vividly cartoonish world of thick black outlines and flat, pure colors." I'm not sure whether this is still true, but earlier press bulletins make mention of an overarching quest to find out what's happened to the Great God who once held this poisoned realm together.
The setting channels Empty Head's feelings about a home country and culture that are undergoing rapid alteration. "The internet is just beginning to spread on the island," the developers wrote back in 2016. "Relations with the US are improving. The economy is changing. The people are optimistic for the future, but uncertain what that future will look like."
Again, I'm not sure whether this represents their view of the game today - eight years is a long time. According to the current presskit, it's been a rocky road for Saviorless. "Despite initial support and crowdfunding success, the team faced setbacks due to political tensions, budget constraints, game name

Final Fantasy 7's lead characters have been turned into action figures of all descriptions, most of them selling out quickly without much controversy surrounding them. Cloud, Tifa, and Aertih's Bring Arts figures were the exception. The collectibles caused a stir when they went on sale in 2022 due to the NFT versions of the figures that came with their Digital Plus editions. Square Enix is now selling the Cloud and Tifa options again following Rebirth's release but has made the wise decision to do so without including any NFTs.
Vibrant designs were all the rage in tech throughout the 2010s. Thankfully, developers have come to their senses, which is why we now have a dark mode on every major operating system and app. No matter what app or device it is, I always flip the switch to dark, and here's why.
Enough time has passed to bring us to the next Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 season.
Square Enix has kicked off a new video series for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, focusing on the development of the game. The first episode is out now, and you can check it out below. Clocking in at almost 15 minutes, the episode focuses on how the developers went about creating the game’s expansive world.
The former NPD Group (now named “Circana”) has released its full North American sales data for February, and it seems like it was a pretty solid month for the industry. Players spent $4.7 billion on games, additional content, and hardware in February, up 2 percent year-on-year. Hardware was a weak spot, down 30 percent year-on-year, with PS5 #1 in terms of unit and dollar sales, Switch #2 in terms of unit sales, and Xbox Series X/S #2 in terms of dollar sales.
Helldivers 2 has taken the world by storm ever since its launch in early February, so it’s no surprise that the game is continuing to top sales charts all over the world. Circana (formerly known as the NPD Group) recently released the data for software and hardware sales in the US for the month of February (via analyst Mat Piscatella on Twitter), and Arrowhead Game Studios and Sony’s co-op shooter has topped those charts.
There are some seriously impressive and dedicated modders out there and we have to say that the Fallout London DLC mod is one of the most ambitious we've ever seen.
Rockstar Games has issued a fresh update for Red Dead Redemption 2 — the game's first meaningful patch in 18 months. But, to the disappointment of fans, there's sadly no new content and no sign of any visual upgrades for players on newer console hardware.
Throughout the Series X|S era, Xbox has made a habit of giving away one-of-a-kind consoles to celebrate the release, arrival, or success of certain games and movies. It gave away a Palworld Series S with four unique controllers earlier this year, and a Series X designed to look like it's made of chocolate to mark Wonka's arrival in cinemas. Its latest offering may well be its best to date. A Final Fantasy 14 console to commemorate the MMO finally arriving on Xbox.

We’ll say this up front for those of you still exploring Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s vast world: there are no late-game story spoilers here. As seen in its pre-release debut via a new trailer late last year, the action RPG’s theme song “No Promises to Keep” is performed in-game by Aerith. Behind the scenes though, the track was composed by Nobuo Uematsu, the legendary composer behind the iconic soundtracks for much of the Final Fantasy series, including Final Fantasy VII Remake. The song’s vocals were performed by American singer Loren Allred, who brought her spellbinding singing voice to the track, augmenting the beautiful—yet tragic—world of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the epic story told within it.
