After weeks of speculating why members of the Cryptic Studios team would all start to open their LinkedIn accounts to new work at the same time, reports have now come out that the MMORPG studio is experiencing layoffs.
Layoffs have occurred in the games industry left and right this year, with multiple studios affected since the start of 2023. While it's been a fantastic year for games themselves, with multiple high-profile releases this year, the same can't be said for the people who make the games themselves.
Worries started that Cryptic Studios might be facing layoffs as well after multiple high-profile developers at the MMO dev house list that they were open for work on their personal LinkedIn accounts, all around the same time. This signaled that many at the studio were either impacted by layoffs or could see them on the horizon. We reached out to Gearbox, Cryptic's parent company within Embracer Group, for comment at the time, which one wasn't provided.
Now, a new report from GamesIndustry.biz has surfaced, with a spokesperson now confirming that layoffs have occurred as part of «restructuring» at Embracer Group. In a statement provided to GI.Biz, the Cryptic Studios spokesperson did not specify the number of people affected by the layoffs but confirmed it was part of a broader restructure from Embracer, stating that the studio will now operate under a new part of Embracer, DECA Games.
Here is the statement in full, per the GI.biz report:
«As part of the Embracer Group’s comprehensive restructuring program, Cryptic Studios will now operate under DECA Games,» they said. «In addition to this organizational change, our commitment to Embracer’s directive to reduce costs requires us to undertake difficult personnel changes, including separating from some team members.
»Cryptic Studios will provide job assistance and support those impacted to smooth this transition. Cryptic remains dedicated to supporting its cornerstone free-to-play games and the communities behind them."
We've reached out for comment to learn the extent of the layoffs and which teams at Cryptic were affected — specifically how these layoffs will impact development on their MMORPGs. We'll update this story should Cryptic respond. The layoffs come just a few days after Neverwinter announced their next module, Spelljammer, which is slated to release next week.

Immortals of Aveum was one of the most promising games of 2023, reflected by how they managed to get Electronic Arts as its publisher. However, its financial failure upon release led to its developer, Ascendant Studios, having to play off 45 % of their employees.
The exact release date for Natlan in is unknown, but it is possible to predict a time frame in which the new area will be added to the live-service game. Natlan is the sixth Nation of Teyvat to arrive to HoYoverse’s RPG and its reigning element is Pyro, the title’s equivalent to fire. Natlan has been mentioned a few times before and is expected to be introduced in 2024, as was previously announced by the developer in its post-release calendar. Nevertheless, it does not yet have an established release date. The focus, for now, is on Fontaine and the updates that are pertinent to the land of Hydro.
Ark: Survival Ascended’s publisher has declared its launch successful after the dinosaur survival game sold over 600,000 copies on Steam in the two weeks following launch.
Payday 3 has been met with a fair bit of backlash due to its launch issues in recent weeks, while Embracer Grup – the parent company of Deep Silver, the shooter’s publisher – has also said that the game has performed below its expectations. However, at least where its initial sales are concerned, developer Starbreeze Studios doesn’t seem to agree.
Payday 3's release and sales expectations have been discussed by both developer Starbreeze and the studio's parent company Embracer.
Everybody's favourite bulk-buyer of studios and licenses Embracer Group have announced that they've laid off 900 people over the last three months, as per restructuring plans revealed this summer - around five percent of their total workforce.
Embracer co-founder and CEO Lars Wingefors has confirmed 900 employees were laid off in the past financial quarter, representing five percent of the workforce.
To say that Payday 3 didn’t get off to the best start would be a bit of an understatement. The long-awaited co-op shooter launched in September to widespread criticism from critics and audiences alike, catching flak for everything from its progression mechanics and lack of content to connectivity issues and more. That, unsurprisingly, has seen the game performing worse than Embracer Group – parent company of publisher Deep Silver – would have expected, in spite of having managed to attract 3.1 million players in September.
The video game industry’s string of layoffs continues: Digital Bros. Entertainment and Kongregate have both announced job cuts.
Cult of the Lamb, Unpacking, Heavenly Bodies, The Artful Escape, Moving Out, Untitled Goose Game, Hollow Knight. Standout indie games made in Australia have been abundant in the past few years. And Stray Gods is very much following in these footsteps this year.
