Blizzard Entertainment struck gold with World of Warcraft and it has been dominating the MMO space for almost two decades. Overwatch was originally envisioned as Project Titan, a new MMORPG that would not be a part of the Diablo, Starcraft, or Warcraft franchises.
Speculation around the game began all the way back in 2007 and the game was internally canceled in 2013 but Blizzard made an official announcement in 2014. Assets from Project Titan were repurposed and the direction of the game took a massive shift into what we now know as Overwatch. But what if the game did not get canceled, does Overwatch have the potential to be a proper MMORPG franchise?
Following Titan’s cancellation, the remaining team at Blizzard which includes Jeff Kaplan and Chris Metzen, came up with a new idea and turned the game into a PvP title. Call of Duty, Battlefield, Counter-Strike, and Team Fortress dominated the FPS space when Overwatch was being developed and Blizzard was about to go up against some serious competition.
Overwatch managed to stand out because it feels like a mix of MOBA team-based shooters like Team Fortress 2. It was even released just before the battle royale hype kicked in and continued to thrive. As players began to know more about Project Titan following Overwatch’s release, players wanted more PvE content.
Lore and storytelling are not prioritized by developers when it comes to most competitive shooters but Overwatch stood out because of its cinematics and comics. The lore of Overwatch is nothing to write home about it’s the storytelling through the cinematics that intrigued fans. Fans wanted more from the PvE experiences within the seasonal events and it looked like Blizzard wanted to deliver.

Things are arguably better for Blizzard than they have been for a while given the successful launch of Diablo IV, but what about another game that recently launched, Overwatch 2? Things aren’t so rosy there. Blizzard recently canned the game’s paid PvE component, and according to the latest Activision Blizzard earnings report, despite going free-to-play and delivering a fairly steady cadence of new content, Overwatch 2 is already starting to bleed players.
Blizzard games will be coming to Steam, starting with Overwatch 2 on 10th August, giving PC gamers an option outside of Battle.net for where they buy and play their Blizzard games.
Blizzard is bringing a selection of its PC games over to Steam, starting with Overwatch 2. The free-to-play team-based shooter is headed to Valve's gaming client on August 10, in what appears to be a change in Blizzard's strategy due to its impending acquisition by Microsoft and the low player engagement the game has garnered in recent times. The Windows PC version of Overwatch 2 and other games from the publisher is largely restricted to its Battle.net launcher — a hot topic for most PC gamers, who prefer having all their games on one platform and hate having to juggle between them. The Steam version will also include the niceties of unlockable achievements and cross-platform multiplayer.
Blizzard Entertainment today announced that they’re finally planning on releasing some of their games on Steam starting with Overwatch 2.
In May, Activision Blizzard warned that the Overwatch League is not in a good place. The city-based esports league is facing «headwinds,» as the publisher put it, that are taking a toll on both its current operations and its long-term future. It also acknowledged that efforts to address those challenges «may prove unsuccessful,» although Overwatch League head Sean Miller said the company remains «committed to Overwatch esports,» and that the league is «not going away anytime soon.»
